It depends on what rpm you want to shift at. Or are you talking about the a/t?

I think he is talking about top speed @ redline in first gear. I have no clue so I cant help but my current automatic corsica can do 45mph in first. So for a tC with a 5spd I would say maybe 35-45 range.

Edit: If you have checked that it goes to 28mph, then I take it you own a tC. So why not just take it down your street in first gear then? Im not sure if to many tC owners out there really want to redline first gear just to give you a answer.

i dont mean redline it... i mean hit it to 6500 rpm...

i know an s2000 hit 40mph in first gear tho.... then like 60 on 2nd gear (3rd gear i forgot)

im sure it hits about 30-35mph.

im just askin because for racing situations... once you hit 30mph, shift

people complain that i cant race. i actually ont wanna rev my engine up or hit near redline...

but really when i race i hit between 5000-6000 rpm each gear.... and this is the tC im talkin about

I can see. Thats some what why there is a tach. If you dont want to take the time to look down look into getting a cheap shift light. Maybe even like a little buzzer that will make noise when you should shift. With out driving the car & knowing how the gears are set I would need to test it out. Looking at the specs on scion.com with peak HP @ 5700rpm & TQ @ 4000rpm. With that info I would say shift right around the peak HP number so when you take the next gear it drops you right near your peak TQ so it can pull you on through to the next gear. Just my guess & suggestions though.

yea at high rpms like 5-6 then shift the engine roars louder in the middle of your shifting.... its like rrreeeeeee..... REAAA!!! rreeeee.... REAA!!!! rrreeee.... haha i like that sound..

i wonder how S/C would sound.. i know turbo got that air blow like ____ sound when you shift it goes ____! now that sound is the ____...

i got question. is it just my var or everytime you wobbing it side by side on neutral you hear a clicking sound? or i move it to the right and the click sound just clicks? all the manual cars ive driven on dont click like that. even my friends ask whats that clicking sound.

does anyones tC stick shift does that too???

Car & Driver shows the speeds in each gear...

DRIVETRAIN Transmission: 5-speed manual
Final-drive ratio: 4.24:1
Gear, Ratio, Mph/1000 rpm, Max test speed
I, 3.54, 4.7, 29 mph (6200 rpm)
II, 2.05, 8.2, 51 mph (6200 rpm)
III, 1.33, 12.6, 78 mph (6200 rpm)
IV, 0.97, 17.2, 107 mph (6200 rpm)
V, 0.78, 21.6, 127 mph (5900 rpm)
You can use math to figure out speeds in any gear at any rpm.

Thats true about the math part. 29mph in first? That seems low. I dont have a tach in our 94 ranger but that 100hp bad boy I got up to 24in first one time just because I was seeing how much ***** it had, the engine did sound loud though but I did not hit the rev limiter. I guess thats what they mean by a close ratio 5spd though. Its odd when looking at 127mph@5900rpm. I thought most of the ppl say while doing 80 in a tC you are in the 3000 near the 4000rpm range?

~3700rpm @ 80mph in 5th gear.

1st gear is very low. I haven't tried it, but I think starting out in second gear would be no problem at all.

Thanks for that info. In most cases they do say start out in second. I read some where that you should only use first when towing things or starting out on hills but any other time just start out in second. Now I think this only flys with 4 & 5 spd manuals though. I think the old 3 on the tree ratios would have been a little wide to get started in 2nd.

Why are some of you so afraid to go up to your redline? You have a rev-limiter which was installed specifically so you don't put your engine into RPM ranges it can't handle. In the Honda's I've raced, I'd bounce it off the limiter one or twice (There's not much time inbetween) and then shift, using up every last bit of power in that gear.

I do know that many Honda's keep making power all the way up to the limiter. with C's, however, I'm not sure what the power curve looks like. Yes, it may make sense to shift before you hit the limiter if power delivery slopes off, but don't be afraid of the rev-limiter.

Yeah you could always start out in second if you want, but it's going to wear your clutch sooner. Hell you could start out in 3rd, just rev the car to 4000 and slip the clutch out. Then you wouldn't risk that fragile 2nd gear! LOL If using 1st gear is too much hassle then get an automatic.

Back to the original topic. The person who said 29 mph was right. It never ceases to amaze me that people will believe their own anectdotal evidence over simple math. It doesn't make a bit of difference how fast your old Ford Ranger went in first gear. Good Lord.

yea the tC got alot of torque, i think you could get off on 4th gear too.. but the car is gonna start rumbling. you wont stall out tho.

yea i hit 28mph on 1st gear, but the A/C was on. that should make a difference right?
