If you accidentally leave your lights on...

If your lights are ON when you turn the car off... they will automatically turn off when you open the door to get out of the car. Locking has nothing to do with it.
They will turn right back on after you get back in and start it.

the feature might only work if you have your headlights on, not just your parking lights. that might be why your parking lights were still on, if you're saying you got back to your car and they were. but i really don't know.
i do know however, that there is another way to leave your lights on. i learned this the hard way unfortunately. i had parked in front of my house one night, and didn't turn my lights off manually when i got out. they turned off by the auto-off function. a while later, i went to go check a cd i had made by getting in on the PASSENGER side, turning the key to ACC, and playing music. i turned it off, got out and went back inside. a few hours later my neighbor came over and told me my lights were on.
so in conclusion, the auto off feature only works when the drivers door is opened, not the passenger. this may be stated in the manual, but i apparently missed it, and felt like an idiot as a result.

Yea i always just leave the lights on 24/7 they just turn off when you turn the car off then as soon as you open the door they shut off....also i love how the power windows still work after you turn the car off too. This car is nothing but a smart with american laziness written all over it. I love it!

I frequently leave the lights on at AutoX's because I will have the car running with the windows down and reach through the window and turn the car off if there is a delay in starting. I usually remember quickly and go open and close the driver's side door.

notice this technology from toyota has been like this probably before 1993 (my camry does it).
the lights will auto-off only if you turn your car off and OPEN THE DOOR....
but it will not turn off if you OPEN THE DOOR then turn your car off...

i tried this last night....
left my light on, took the key out then the annoying noise. closed my door....and waited for it to go out....maybe its just on yaz tC's....my xB's lights stay bright. so maybe some of you are wrong---its not for all new cars.
