I think the main difference is the RPM at which the power comes in... I looked at the 06 specs on edmunds.com and it says 160hp at 6000rpm, and 163lb ft at 4200rpm.

The 07 specs on scion.com say 161hp at 5700rpm abd 163lb ft at 4000rpm.

So the power went up that tiny 1hp, but also arrives earlier, so overall feels more powerful I guess.

It's not 1hp difference. It's about a 5-6hp difference. new SAE rating for '05-'06 is about ~154, new SAE rating for '07 is 161hp.

I heard tranny gearing was in the works as well. It should have a better pickup, but who knows, rumors been spreading all over for 6 months.

lots of work for minimal gains aside, is it even possible to swap the 07 intake manifold on to the 06?

I'm guessing if anyone blows their engine in a 05 or 06 they will get it replaced with a new 07 engine?

05-06 is 160, not 154.

It's a 1 HP difference.
He's going by the new SAE HP ratings. Apparently the majority of overseas automakers have "overestimated" their advertised horsepower ratings. Under the new guidelines, which are more strict than the previous ones, the advertised horsepower ratings have dropped. In our case, the 05/06 2AZ-FE is now rated at 154 instead of 160. I think the consensus is that the 07s are following the new SAE rules, therefore the difference in horsepower is more than just 1.
