The light is a #74 mini incandescent lamp. This type of bulb is usually found behind the "idiot lights" on older automobile dashes. If you take off the center console, you can see that there is one wire that is held on by a plastic push pin retainer. Push the the sides of the fastener and you can release the wire. I just pulled out the wire gently and it came loose from its holder. From there, I was able to pull out the bulb gently with two fingers as it was no longer obstructed by the center console.
The bulb can be replaced by a LED with a wedge base in size T1-3/4. I found a few sites out there that sell these LED replacements from the #74 lamp. However, they all require a minimum purchase order or shipping through UPS at like $6.00.
I found a place that is able to sell individual lamps and ships through USPS so it ends up pretty cheap. http://autolumination.com. I have no affilliation with them, but they seem convenient for small purchases.
I will post an update once I receive the lamp replacement LED from them and see how it fits.

I installed the LED replacment bulb from autolumination yesterday. It works great. However, I did lose the ability to dim the bulb from the rheostat on the gauge cluster. I think the brightness is perfect, so it doesn't matter.

...I AM SO GLAD I AM NOT ALONE...(the light in that area is really annoying...)
only if there's like a motion sensor there, the light only comes on when it sense movement
another thing...the glove compartment has no light...find that quite annoying

after I read this thread I went and looked, and sure enough, I have a lil amber LED in there, but mine is really really dim... even when it is black outside, you can't really tell it's on...
I'd love to change it, anyone know what size it is, or where to get a new one ?
