Won't you run the risk of burning the fuel pump? I fill-up right after my fuel light turns on.

Mine was just a hair over empty when I got to the station. Had 360 miles on that tank. Took 12.9 to fill it up, so I suppose I had another 40 miles or so left to run out.

The lowest I've been is also a hair over "E", and I also filled it up with 12.9 gal.

This reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld when Kramer tests drives that Saab with the salesman and keep driving and driving with the gauge on E.

Default gas light

i normally go about 40 miles after light comes on. I have had the needle below E and it still only held 13.5 gallons. TC has 14.5 gallon .

It went below the R with my friends. I thought I was going to run out and put 10 bucks in. When do I need to fill up? Below the line or at the line? I'm not too sure when the Reserve starts.

Because when it hits R it starts into reserve (hence the R). So there is still a couple of gallons in the tank. Most people dont run for long periods when the light comes on, so it is actually not empty. If you get 14.5 in it... you barely made it

i heard that you should keep at least a quarter tank but preferably a half tank at least. Apparently in our cars, the fuel pump is in the gas tank, so the gas in the tank is what cools down the fuel pump, if you dont have enough gas in there you can cause the pump to overheat and degrade its lifespan...this is what I was told so if anyone knows otherwise let me know, but i'm sticking with a half tank now days.

When I went to a local dealer for my first test drive, the dealer handed me some keys to take out myself while he helped some other customers. About 4-5 minutes in, I noticed the fuel was below 'e' so made my way back to the dealer. That, and the dealer that seemed to care less about actually showing me the car (and that it took the dealer 20 minutes to find someone who could get some keys for me) convinced me to go to the other guy.
