Metal Clanging

Metal Clanging
Hey guys. It's been snowing here in the northeast and i've been on the roads. I've gotten to car stuck once or twice and when the tires would spin, I would hear what sounds like metal clanging around underneath the car or under the hood. The sound was quite unsettling. My first instinct is the downpipe or exhaust hitting against something, but I am really clueless about it. I know its hard to help diagnose something like this without seeing the car, but has anybody else had this problem or anybody have any idea what it could be? Thanks

I honestly can't tell because the only time I hear it is when the wheels are spinng, so that hides the noise a bit, but when they are spinning, it definitely sounds like a metal pipe hitting other metal

That's strange. Sorry I have no clue to the possibilities. If I think of something I'll get back with ya. But I would tried hoisting the front end w/ tires off the ground and have someone accelarate while you listen to where it's coming from.

So I brought in the car to the dealer today to take a look at about the banging of pipes. They are keeping my car overnight and they seem to think there is something wrong with the transmission. While they were looking at that, they were telling me that the engine sounds really bad. GREAT. We'll see where this goes. They are telling me that nothing under the transmission is covered under warranty. I'm at 28K, so i'll try to fight it.

hey spect2k3- the dealer is full of it if they think the transmission isn't covered. That's what they call it a POWERTRAIN warranty, that's both the engine AND the transmission. Probably the dealer is trying to use that it's a manual as an excuse like you damaged it. Yeah right.
If they give you enough trouble and won't help, like I've always said find another dealer. Everytime we deal with the dealer why is it such a monumental undertaking? Sheesh.
Oh and the Powertrain warranty is out to 60k miles. So yes you're covered. Also I bet these people are deaf and claiming it's the engine when really it's the transmission. I doubt you'd not be able to tell it was the engine or not. keep us posted on what happens.

Haha, thanks you guys. Those ***bags tried to **** me over so nice. They told me that it was the throw-out bearing and its not covered under warranty. Now we all know that a throw-out bearing won't possibly sound like metal clanging around (especially when i'm not on the clutch). But anyway, I took it for a test with the forman and the problem was solved, so w/e, but then came the part about the warranty. They are trying to convince me that it was a wear and tear item etc and its not covered under warranty. They want to hit me with a $600 bill. VERY LONG story short (I got toyota corp on the phone when I was there), it ended that I was gonna pay the bill on my charge card and then dispute it (so I can get my car back as I had to get to work). So i'm about to pay it and I see that the bill states that they replaced the throw-out bearing. So of course, I say, "I'd like the have the old one back". These jack***es come out with a freaking pressure plate that looks like it came off of a big rig. I said "Do you think i'm freaking stupooooooooooid??!? lol I know what a throw-out bearing is, so stop trying to con me even more than you have". So of course, "ummm, we must've thrown it out". PEACE OUT, I PAID NOTHING! hahaha I was sooo happy when I left there especially knowing that I reported their actions to toyota corporate and took a picture on my cell of what they tried to give me (the pressure plate).
Gotta love dirtbag/lying/sleezeball dealers. This is why i'm travelling from now on to go to a dealer that I trust more.........but ONLY if I HAVE to!
Thanks for the support guys!!!!

well spect2k3- at least you got it for free, should've been free. Definitely take a longer trip to a dealer that can do the right job and not give you grief about it.
I read that JD Powers put out a survey result about dealership service, they put Toyota at the last place. I can really see it from my experience. There are some Toyota/Scion dealers that are good, but i've gone back a 2nd time to some of them after having a nice first experience and they're no longer nice the 2nd time. It's like wow, one hit wonders for service. I think Toyota really needs to overhaul their service departments. not cool at all.
