My $8,000+ hail damaged tC. Sigh...
Summary:
- Really bad hail damage on an '05 tC.
- The quote for damage was about $8,000+ (yep you read that right).
- State Farm estimates the car at about $10,500 (I have about 114k miles on her and the hail damage).
- After sending receipts of aftermarket items it bumps it up to about $11,500.
- SFarm will total the car and I can buy it back for about $4,000; they will cut me a check for ~$6,600 for the rest.
- I only owe $3,300. The rest will be sent to me.
- With my deductable added my car should be paid off but I'll need to get it fixed out of pocket (another $5k).
- The car will not receive a 'salvaged title' but will be useless to trade in or sell without it being fixed.
I've decided to keep her because she's my DD but it's annoying as fugg to see the dings.
Here are some pics. I wish there was snow on the ground because it would help a lot with the poor reflection. The passenger side was hit the worst hence why I chose to just shoot that side (there is damage on both sides). Some of the images were inverted so you can see the damage.
The hood, trunk and passenger fender would be an easy fix (replace) but costly as these body panels are not cheap from Toyota nor easy to find used. Ironically an aftermarket hood will be cheaper than one from Toyota. I may FG a hood using this as a mold.
Peppered...
Hood inverted.
Passenger fender inverted.
The passenger pillar was rocked good. PDR is not gonna' fix those.
Trunk inverted.
This gives you an idea of the reflection...
Here is a short youtube video.

Good god... was it raining baseballs or something?
No glass damaged though? That seems really odd. I could understand it being pretty expensive actually - with that many dings, that's a lot of work to pull them out and get it smooth again.

the pictures are horrible..I could barley see a difference...but im guessing you just have a bunch of dents right? You should go to a dent expert. Believe me they do the job.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7JprFshq2A

I too was surprised when the glass didn't shatter. The hail were the size of golf ball to tennis ball that day. I was in our store and just heard a whirling-pinging death. We ran to the back for shelter because it really did sound like a tornado. When it cooled down I went to check on my car and caught a glimpse of the leftover hail still hitting her.

Manual. Also she has about 114k on the ticker...
I do minor bodywork too but honestly I've got three other cars hurting for attention.
She won't require hard work, just long hours for some areas.
I'll think about it.
BTW nice specs on your tC. I have the same GT35r planned for the Alltrac. Should be good for 550hp. What's yours pushing?

How did it not get a salvaged title if the vehicle was totaled? Will you still be able to get full coverage on a totaled vehicle?
Sorry about your loss, but if you plan to keep the car for a long time then resale value wont mean much. Atleast you get a paid off car so thats a plus and you get a new paint job!

Why even worry about fixing it? You are going to be DD the car. So its just gonna get dings and more stuff on it. It has 114k miles so their has to be some rock chips etc anyway. Paid-off reliable car for DD = good thing. Use the extra money and invest in something or even an interest yielding checking account. Then when you are done with school you have some money in case you lose your job or cant find one right away. That really doesn't look bad at all. You can either take GREAT advantage of the situation or be like any other person that suddenly has a lump sum of cash and doesn't know what to do with it. (get in more debt) The decision is yours' make a good one!
