^^^ you're the lucky bastard i had to get my lisence when i was 18 , old enough to get it bymyself and behind my parents back. I had my lisence for 6 months until i bought the tc and they got mad knowing i did something behind their back. They had me working when i was 15 at a catering company with my brother.

You're all lucky. Why, when I was a kid, all we had to play with was dirt and we had to steal that. Had to walk 5 miles to school, up hill...both ways.....in the snow. At 16, my transportation was a brand spankin new Huffy dirt bike. Had to give it back 2 days later. The real owner was pretty mad.

first off congratulations to the original poster. second to sciondad....and third, damn people are jerks. just because you didn't get a new car when you were 16, doesn't mean that this kid is spoiled. yeash. and i love how someone said this kid is spoiled, and that he wouldn't drive a car he hadn't paid fully for, yet said right before that his parents gave him there old saturn, which he was gonna use as a down payment (wow runon). i think the thing to remember here, is that maybe this kid desereved it. maybe he's a good kid, has gotten straight a's all his life....or has always been the kid there parents wanted him to be. so they rewarded him, maybe you weren't........oh, and btw, i got to borrow my parents car on the weekends.

The Saturn I didn't get when I was 16, but over 3 years later. Slight difference I think. I took it as it was the best thing financially for my family, it worked out for everyone. Also, I said I wouldn't want a 'brand new' car if I couldn't pay for it myself, meaning I already have a steady job with a good income, saved up for a down payment for a long time, etc.

I'm 16 and I just came home with my tC today. And yes, my parents paid for it. You all have valid points in saying that humble beginnings are beneficial, but I have to defend my position somewhat. I have been given a great privelage to be able to drive this car, but I have worked hard to earn my parents' trust and confidence. I've busted my butt in school and I've kept up with my chores and such at home. I haven't given them any reason not to trust me. I went out and got a job to earn the money I need for the gas I'll have to buy. I'll be contributing to the insurance payments of the car as well.
Truthfully, I would've taken anything with wheels. But my parents wanted to make sure I had a new, safe, reliable car and ordered the airbags accordingly.
But, after saying all of that-
I hate the little snotty-nosed brat who gets the RX-8 on his 15th birthday and doesn't pay a cent (yes, I know someone who was this spoiled).

I'm 17 and after driving a little 85 Jetta for 2 years my parents a tC that i am going to buy from them when i'm 18. And i would have to second the statement on having a beater first, i didn't get in any accidents or anything but you tend to not value your first car all that much, even if it is new. You'll start off saying stuff like "i'm never letting anyone eat in it." or "i'll drive slow so i don't crash." but then the novelty wears off and you're burning out at every stop sign to show off to your friends.
Sorry for rambling, but thats just my $.2

Try this on for size. I started working at age 13. At 16 I bought a used Mazda truck for $2000. You name it, I paid it. At a 18 I graduated high school, spent the next 4 years working full time and attending college fulltime. Graduated college, got a great paying job, 5 years later the Mazda died. I rewarded myself with a tC. That's true example of earning a vehicle!
