Default My key looks like sh*t!

Mods, feel free to move it because i really didnt know where this should go? i remember a thread like this but its been a gooooood while.

Anywho, ive had my tC a little over 3yrs now. I first noticed my key getting some indentions around the buttons probally about 4-5 months into owning the car. i now noticed it tearing and cracking about 2 months ago. the LOCK button is starting to tear and the others are going to pretty soon. I dont think ive ever pressed the PANIC button and it looks like crap. i still have my other keys but WTF?

Just wanted to share this with yall and feel free to post some pics of your ugly key. I know yall's is jacked up to.

just get a new copy..they will probably make you a new key that looks just like the 08-09's plus our key version looks ten times better and barley any wear and tear.

That sucks bro. I don't know how much it would cost to replace since it has a chip. Probably all they need to do is reprogram it. Yeah, by buddies '06 tC had the same problem, thats probably why they came out with a new version for the new models.

cost of a new key is ridiculous. I remember the dealer wanting over a hundred bux for a new key and the programming when I had my 06. The new keys seem to hold up well to wear and tear though.

yea i think around $70+ to reprogram it? My sister has the new key for he 07 and i dont care for it. I dont like the blank space and it looks a bit weird for my. My GF's 09 Camry is the same but black, im thinking if needed ill ****** up the Toyota Camry's key and program that one? Dont know if it will work since it has the trunk release?

Mine is a bit worse than yours.

I wonder if heat (sun or body), as well as salts on our skin could be causing them to degrade so badly....

This is what my key looked like. It still worked.

I bought a used one, with the hard plastic buttons off ebay and made it work for me. It was about $9.

I had to cut the metal key part out of both and squeezed my key part in and then scraped out the old transponder chip, cut out mine, and just stuck it in. Works like new.

I was going to take pics to document the process, but when I posted this back then, no one seemed to have the same problem, so I didn't bother.

If anyone is interested I can take some pics of my new key and explain better how it was done.

Please do explain... I am baffled how you got your old metal key into the new plastic housing, and more importantly how it has held together?

My key broke, and I superglued the ____ out of it hoping it would hold up, but two or three turns in the ignition and the glue gave up.

Please elaborate on how you did the switch

i would think switch the chip or whatever is inside the key to the new one and get the new one cut at a locksmith?
