I'm probably going to regret taking this back apart again...

Ok, so the first thing I did was take apart the new key. I started by cutting a straight line from the edge of the key toward the back. The back of the metal part is in a T shape. By cutting at an angle on one side it left the slot for that to tuck into. After cutting through, I was able to bend the plastic back enough to twist the old key out.

You can see the angled cut mark on the right side.

Obviously I wasn't as careful taking the old key part out. But because I left the slots for the T part, I was able to snap it back in.

Next I spent an hour using a utility knife scraping out the old transponder. I cut out mine and just put it in the new one where there is no button.

And...

It was absolutely perfect until I started getting creative and tried melting the plastic around the cuts so it would hold better. It wound up shrinking the whole piece and won't go back together as perfectly. It's been like this for 6 months and hasn't had any real problems that wouldn't have occurred without melting it.

it's not just the keyless that hasta be programmed.... the key has an immobilizer chip in it that prevents the vehicle from starting if the chip isn't present. you can pick up a new key with the chip for around $70, then anywhere from $40-80 in programming depending on your dealer.... trick is, it HASTA be programmed by the dealer. toyota keys hafta be programmed by using a toyota computer tool, so other shops (at least to my knowledge) don't have access to that.

lame o, cuz i can program ford and chrysler keys all day long!

yeah mine looks like yours landark...when i took it to the dealer he told me $80 and i said F that...mine still works fine. You can go to an alarm/stereo shop and get a remote start fob with the remote start for around $100...might as well get that...

not true my man.... the issue lies with the immobilizer.... whether you start the car with a key or with a remote start you HAFTA send the vehicle's computer the signal that's in your key, or the fuel pump is disabled and the car dies.

2 options with remote start are:

1. directed 556uw module - retail $60 + extra $30ish in labor and you hafta sacrifice a spare key (that is already programmed to start the car)

the key goes in the module, the module has a small ring that is routed up to the key cylinder, and when the remote start is activated it allows signal to pass thru the ring making the vehicle "think" that the key is in the ignition, and thus keeps the fuel pump running.

2. xpress xk05 module - retail $80 + extra $30ish in labor. this has 2 data wires that interface with the ecm and send the data signal that your key would directly to the vehicle's computer, thus allowing the fuel pump to run and the car to auto start. takes 1 key to program and you get it back.

add that to the cost of a decent remote start (we're talkin about $230ish with labor) and you're at leas 3 bills out the door, and you still have a fubar'd key.

umm guys, i dont know who told you $70 for one of those keys but dealership list price on them is $229 plus an hour labor for programming.

Hope you dont lose all your keys, then its 2hrs labor because they have to back track the system and reprogram a new code into the system..

I got the directed 556uw module but my key dont fit inside the module, will the valet key work/fit? I didnt get a valet key since I got the car used.

the chip in the key is all that needs to be in the 556uw, you can hack it apart and take the chip out, or cut the metal key part off and just cram the gray section in the 556, or get a valet key made. Any key that will START the car will work.

My 06 is almost 3 years old and the key looks pretty new. But I have an alarm and use that remote instead, so I can't remember the last time I actually used the key buttons.

Yanki01, did you steal my key? lol Mine looks exactly like that, same crack and everything. It's annoying. I have to hold it at the base of the key to turn on the car or the key falls apart.
