NHTSA investigation - sunroof glass shattering..
#121
i've driven 100-110mph for a good 30-45 minutes on the interstate with the sunroof open all the way and notice any problems.
when I topped my car out (127mph) I also had the sunroof openned all the way and I don't have any problems.

(which BTW you can still see somewhat after the "repair" )I have NEVER had a windshield break let alone chip on any car. My last car was a 02 wrangler whose windshield looked sand blasted from hits (almost at a 90 degree angle) but NO CHIPS OR CRACKS. I find it interesting that many new buyers of TCs are experiencing this problem.

Lets say it was rock damage that caused the deflector to break, so what, its still a bad choice of deflector material. If it has the potential to cause accidents (which it sounds like it does), then its a bad design. But since this investigation is for air pressure, well all just have to wait and see what the results are.

Dear Blue.
Cool your jets man...I was merely making an observation. Oh and BTW do you know for a fact that the windshield angle is acute or not???
Dear Captain,
Read my thread entitled "WIND DEFLECTOR", and you will see that it was probably NOT a rock and with this design, tempered glass is a pefectly sound choice.

if you read my post, you will see that I was actually responding to OTHER PEOPLE who said it was a ROCK!. i personally made no claim to know whether it was rock or air pressure damage. And no it is not a good choice of material especially since rocks WILL often hit it, just like rocks that hit the windshield. Windshields dont shatter, but the deflector does!

Dear Captain,
I wasnt accusing you of anything, merely making an observation.
I originally agreed that glass was a poor choice of material. However after examing the deflector I observed that it moves down under pressure rather easily. The faster you drive the more it moves down. At at about 95mph it's almost flat. This is why I doubt it broke from air pressure or even a rock. I still suspect faulty installation.
Now upon further investigation I have noticed one more thing that seems to be different from other cars. These glass panels unlike other cars sun roofs dont have a rubber edging around it's perimeter. The edge of tempered glass is the weakest point.
The most vunerable position would be when it is in the up position. But this only occurs when the car is still or going very slow. So you eliminate the force applied by your vehicles speed AND the speed of the rock combined to just the speed of the rock. Anyhting's possible, but I still think it is a problem with the installation.

Dear Captain tC:
I'm just simply saying any windshield can chip or crack! Everyone knows that... And why does it matter if the windsheild is acute? That makes no sense, I know it was a joke but it still made no sense. Again any windsheild on any vehicle can chip or crack, It's glass. BTW I'm coooool I'm just saying....

Actually I'm not joking... for this height vehicle the angle of the windshield may be exactly at the point where if a stone were to hit it it would cause a chip more often, rather then skip off. Simply, a change of a 1/4 degree could make a world of differnece. It can also involve many other subtle fractors any of which would only require a very minor change to effect a different out come. Somethimes R&D involves trial and error.

if that is their position, which i see no evidence as of yet that it is, it will not hold water. this potential defect has nothing to do with stupid owners. one should be able to use the sunroof at highway speeds. if one can't, the sunroof by definition is defectively designed, regardless of whether the manufacturer suggests how you use it. it's a freakin' sunroof! it should be able to be open at all foreseeable speeds.

I'm on day 11 without my tc because of this happening to my car. Windows were up and roof was closed driving 70 on the interstate.
those who have had this happen be sure your dealership checks to make sure glass debris has not falling into your curtain airbags as well.
