Default Oil for the tC

What are all you buffs using for oil in your tC's? I have been using the 5w20 syntec stuff which has seem to been pretty nice but every 3000 miles or so before an oil change the oil is low like where I need to add a half quart or something its not burning or leaking oil as strange as that sounds I have triple checked everything I bought the car brand new it has about 50k on it now so I am just wandering maybe that oil is too light for the car? just so light its seeping through spots? Cause it is a pretty light oil. Any suggestions would he great thanks!

whatever it says on the oil cap is what you're supposed to use.

No, it's not "too light" for the tC, I've used it myself and prefer it over anything else. If you're really concerned, you could run the 5w-30 with no worries.

Some engines simply use more oil than others, often due to the differences in manufacturing tolerances. Half a quart in 3000 miles is nothing to be concerned about (older cars had somewhat of a defacto industry standard, where anything less than a quart in 1500 miles was acceptable), provided it's consumption doesn't increase beyond that.

If its not leaking the oil than it has to be burning it. You might try to up to a 5w-30 oil and a different brand to see if it helps. I'd try Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum.

Does everyone change at 3K ? The manual says 5K.

So if 5K is OK on "regular oil" why in the world you run sync and change it every 3K ? Seems like a waste to me (unless your turboed).

Oh wait, i know why because a lot of people feel they know more about Toyota's engine then Toyota themselves !

3k if you can afford to do it that often. But 5k is fine too.

for the oil you are using you can go 5000,plus just check the oil every so often and add a little for what is being burnt,it is normal.if you hamer on the motor, then it will burn more and need sooner changes.

Mine has finally started to use about 1/3 quart every 5000 miles, figure when I hit 50000 miles it will be using a 1/2 quart........it is normal, now just be sure to keep an eye out for leaks, they will be apparent, trust me you will see them, once you start leaking you need to wathc it and at worst change the seal it is leaking from .........depending on where it is it can be easy to pain in the butt........

toyota motors with regularly changed oil are gonna last a long time though, they are over built and under powered for what they will take.

step up to 5w30 and you will be bette off as that is what toyota recomends to use.......

Motul 300V 5W30. I'm gonna do a used oil analysis around November to see how well this pricey as hell banana juice oil performed. Also a note for you Mobil 1 guys, use Mobil 1 Extended Performance, not the regular stuff. Reason? Regular M1 is not a true synthetic anymore. Exxon has taken a page out of Castrol's playbook and started using extensively refined petroleum oil that, under US law, can be called "synthetic". M1EP and Castrol Edge (different from Syntec) for that matter are true synthetics.

You are wasting perfectly good oil and filter if you are changing it that soon. You can run those for 7.5k-10k miles.
