Default question about MT...really worried

I don't know what's up with my car, so i need to ask you guys

I have a M/T tC, and sometimes, it's really hard for me to put the gear on 1st. It's almost like i have to force in, and while i do that, i feel like i am grinding the gear because it is not a "smooth" process.

There is something wrong with this b/c i know the gears normally goes in really smooth. man..i am really worried about it. Any help?

Try putting it into 2nd then first. First gear generally doesn't have synchros so it doesn't match up as smoothly as the other gears.

when ur putting it 1st gear.. r u down shifting? or are you putting it in 1st from a stop.. note that you're not suppose to put it in 1st gear while the car is moving. just a heads up.

There's a thread on here somewhere (can't find at the moment) that shows a couple people who have had trans problems on the tc. At least one had to be replaced.

hmm... i've had trouble putting the gear into reverse. But i think it's because i wasn't pushing the clutch down far enough...

first gear shouldn't be a problem... hmm. I wonder why u're having that issue?

I too have the occassional reverse issue. I just put it into first then reverse and it pops in fine. Never had an issue with 1st. Actually, I'm kinda surpise how easy it is to get in first, even while moving. Previous manuals were difficult to get into first while moving.

I have the same issue. I dont believe it is anything major. And it usually occrus to me while downshifting as I roll to a stop. I tend to shift into gear before I actually stop. If you were grinding gears you would definately hear and feel the grinding.

As long as you arent applying enough force to break anything, then you should be fine. I just keep applying the same pressure until it slips in.

If you still have concerns over it then go to the dealer. You are under warranty and they wont charge you if they dont find anything wrong. If you have to, ask to have someone ride along with you as you try to duplicate problem. You know how your car behaves better than they will.

Good luck.

My TC falls into gear real nice. What your describing is poor separation of the clutch from the flywheel and pressure plate. This is caused when you push on the clutch pedal not enough travel is created. On a new car i would guess there is air in the clutch line. A simple bleeding out of the air should fix that. or there is a pedal adjustment to increase travel by removing the freeplay. ( you want a little freeplay or you will wear out your throw(thrust) bearing.

The dealer will fix this for you.

i think it's normal. i had that happen to my IS and sometimes my tC. i usually just shift into another gear before going into first/reverse if it doesn't go in the first time. but might as well get it checked by the dealer anyway.... it doesn't happen to me all the time and you don't want to take chances.

Agreed. Same problem on my supra (actually the IS and the MK3 supra had the same R-154 iirc). That would make sense. Not a big deal.

haha nice... MK3 huh? had a friend who bought a MK3 chassis, rebuilt the engine himself and slipped it in with two turbos... i don't think my neck ever stayed straight up the whole time he was driving and i probably left an imprint of my head in his headrest... 500+ horses is dangerous without some head restraint, haha.

if it KEEPS doing that, then bring it in... like i said, no chances... i've had transmissions go out on me (on american cars though, not foeign... go figure) while i was driving... like 40 mph on a main street coming to a red light and the tranny won't let me downshift... it just goes... so i have to run the red since i won't be able to go when it turns green and pull over while dodging cars at the intersection.

of course the above won't happen... but no chances

This is typical on most cars not just Toyota's. Its hard to get back into first as a design measure to prevetn misshifting. This is the same with the Celica GT (shares the tranny with the tC) the Celica GT-S and at least the Subaru WRX.

If you slow down low enough you will be able to get it into gear. And if you double clutch with the revs high enough (5000 or so on my Celica GT-S) you can get it in.

Its nothing really to worry about.

Reverse has no synchro, so it wont fit sometimes. This is true for all cars.

You can usually rev the car and slip the clutch just a tad to get the transmission to spin a little and you will eventually get it in.

But here is a better tip. If it doesn't want to go into reverse, try matching it up with other gears with synchros first. For example in a Subaru WRX, if you put it in fourth, this will usually line the gears up right for reverse. On my Celica GT-S (six speed) fourth usually works for me too.

There is no problem with your reverse if this is the case.

The MK2 , MK3 and the IS all use versions of the W58 tranny. Only the MK3 turbo used the R154.

You're right. I did not recall correctly. I should have thought longer before posting. The MKIV non-turbo used the W58 so the logic would have told me the IS300 used the W58... oh well.
