Default Radar Detector + Virginia

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I had no idea where to put it so mods please move where appropriate.

Just wondering, I have an Escort Passport 8500 x50 and I'm gonna be driving to school down in Florida in a couple months. Probably come home twice a year or so, anyway. I know its legal to have in NY and everywhere else except washington dc and virginia, which I'll be passing along the way to FL. Here's my question: Is possession illegal or just the use of them illegal?

Just have it off when in VA. Your vehicle is not registered in the state, so aslong as you dont use it in the state you will be fine.

i got pulled over for speeding, following too closely, and going over the yellow lines the other day and the cop gave me a warning and told me to get rid of the radar detector. hahaha theyre legal here though. i guess he just thinks since i have one im gonna speed everywhere i go which is certainly not the case.

Most new radar detectors have radar detector detector detectors/reflectors... wtf? lol

My Cobra I got 2 years ago for 250 bucks hasn't failed me yet even going through VA. I was probably lucky though. I've driven through there from NY to GA about 2 times there and back.

They are illegal to posses in Va. The great thing about this being a commonwealth, it doesn't matter if you live here, or if your car is registered here. If you are within the communistwealth, you fall under their rules. You're best bet would be to hide it while driving through. Put it under your seat/in the hatch..... that way there is no chance they will see it if you do get pulled over for any reason.

Just put it in your glove box keep it off and dotn use it. Regardless of the not being able to possess it in the Commonwealth your registered out of state and not using it. You will be fine. I am not sure about the following there rules no matter what when registered in another state. i mean basic traffic laws and the radar detector are believable one but any not so sure. Like what they gonna ticket you for illegal tint for there state but not so in your state thats just dumbfounded. Although I never liked VA much in the 10yrs I lived there maybe thats a reason why.

Btw, there is such a thing as a radar detector detector detector. Some radar detectors have detector detector detection capabilities.

I'll also add that my buddy just spent a whole month down in Newport News and used my radar detector the whole time and never got in trouble. I think you would be safe for a drive through. I would recommend just keeping it low on the dash or if you have a GPS system put it right under it so if you do get pulled over he'll think it was just the GPS he saw.

I would put it in your glovebox if I were you. I was just talking to a police officer last month. Some counties don't run the detector detectors, because there isn't enough traffic, and the way they shoot radar, the police don't need them. However, he said that state troopers DO run detector detectors, so be careful.

I'm just gonna take it off. I don't really speed in the first place, i use my radar detector just for reassurance. After all, they're not perfect and won't catch every cop so its not worth the risk speeding all the way down.

Good thinking. Be careful on I-81 and I-95 down here. Virginia is all about state funding through traffic tickets.
