RPMs bounce when I put in neutral while coasting...
Noticed something strange yesterday. If I am just cruising down the road (didnt really seem to matter how fast as long as its over like 15mph) and I take it outta gear and just let it sit in neutral, my tach bounces from like 800rpm to 1300rpm. It just sits there bouncing if Im coasting - anybody else have this happen? It doesnt do it if you are going real slow or just sitting still idling though. Weird stuff...

1) You should not take your car out of gear to coast. It's a safety concern and it is illegal in some states (Although not enforceable, it was made illegal for a reason).
2) My mx-6 does the same thing, just not quite as much. The car's ECU is probably trying to find the optimal RPM, slowly going down, to the point where it needs to go up a bit to prevent from stalling. Not sure on that and I'm not an educated opinion, however it makes sense.. but in any case, you shouldn't worry about such things!

Ive always drivin manual. Ive never heard of it being bad for the vehicle, or illegal for that matter. How could it be bad?
You mentioned saftey concerns. What are the saftey risks of neutral coasting exactly? Thats a new one on me.
thanx

someone told me that putting it in neutral while coasting for an automatic transmission is bad because when you put it in neutral the tranmission fluid doesnt move around and lube the gears. I dont know how valid that statement is though because it doesnt really make sense to me.
edit: after i think about it, it must be true because tow truck drivers usually dont tow cars with the drive wheels on the ground. they say it will fry the transmission

it's illegal becuase it may cause you to delay moving out of the way of an emergency vehicle....if one is speeding up behind you it will take longer to put the car back into gear and move out of the way than if you were down shifting to a stop.
