Scion tC 5-SP 2nd gear has a mild power boost/step?

"When the engine is operating below 6000 rpm, the low lobe is operating the rocker arm and thus the valves. When the engine is operating above 6000 rpm, the ECU activates an oil pressure switch which pushes a sliding pin under the slipper follower on each rocker arm. This in effect, switches to the high lobe causing high lift and longer duration."
But they're actually referring to the 2ZZGE engine.

yes, they are talking about the 2ZZ with had LIFT [vvt-li]. The tC doesnt have lift. Therefore no switch in cams.
the tC has vvt-i, where there is no change in cam settings under a certain RPM.

I feel I'm talking to the wall here. The notch that I'm talking about doesn't occur under hard acceleration or above 3000 rpm. It occurs under 3000rpm and using moderate throttle.
I guess I just have to post the actual rpm for you guys to try it on your own cars.

Powerband. It happens in every gear except first.
If you start your car in second gear, you won't have any power untill you get up to the RPM's the gear has its power in. There isn't a "VTEC" like response.
Since the tC makes "peak" torque at 4000 RPMs, it starts to pull harder around 3000 RPMs, which is what you're noticing.

GUYS i recorded a sound clip since its distinct in my car, i capped the intake resonator/silencer and i have an open airbox. everything else is stock. keep in mind that the throttle position is completely constant when i accelerated in 2nd gear. i used L and 2 gears so you know when it was shifted into 2nd.

and notice the changing of engine tone for a half second period. does not sound like this in 1st gear or neutral either.

Some of you might think we're crazy for having this feeling about the car. But it is what it is. So say VTAK all you want.
The feeling is more like there is something wrong more than any "kick in". It kind of feels like a carb car with bad timing or like a newer WRX with the open loop-close loop problem.... but not to that extreme.

yes, I do agree that one of the 1st things new owners do wonder about is VVT-i and if it is related to VTEC. I currently still have a VTEC car in the house so I think I can tell the difference
