I'm probably a little late to chime in, but I was in an Audi/VW dealership not too long ago, with a buddy of mine who bought a used audi A4... he had some things going wrong with the car, so I drove him there to drop off the car.

We waited a while to find out what the diagnosis was... and needless to say, not only did he have to drop a couple grand for broken stuff, but EVERYONE at the dealership we talked to was sick and tired of their Audi/VW (my buddy likes striking conversation with strangers)... apparently they were all in there all the time and spending a lot of money for repairs.

Comparing this to what I normally see at mazda and toyota dealerships, where everyone is just getting their oil changed, gave me a pretty bad impression of those german cars.

and those people complaining about their vw/audis. i think those are the people who see it as too much of a burden and shouldn't have bought one in the first place. i know for sure my next car is gonna be german, but not until im ready. turbo fo sho

^^i don't think those people did their homework. most people i've known to own a Jetta have had problems. I realize the Jetta is the low end car, but still, imo that speaks volumes about the car line. and if i spent 30k plus on a car i'd be ____ed to always have it in the shop.

i always think it's funny to hear people complain about when their BMW has to get fixed and how hard it is to afford. Though I do know the BMW is a great quality car. people are so concerned with how the rest of society thinks of them that some live out of their means. i'm really noticing that now that i live in the land/city of credit cars and looks aka miami.

if i had the cash and didn't live in miami, i'd lease a R32 for two years and give it back. but i wouldn't trade in my tC.

as of right now though, i have 3k let on the car and still putting mods on, so a r32 doesn't make the budget cut.

my friend has a B5 model S4 (2001). It has been through so much replacement parts and trouble that you would not believe. Definitely don't trade hoping to save money. The S4 is going to cost you a lot to keep it drivable, not two mention 2 turbos that are getting ready to go. Plus I'm sure that you will need a new clutch, plus all other maintenance, premium gas (the S4 gets about 20 mpg, and if you step on it then it will eat your gas even faster)...

They are fast cars and the motor will be able to handle the upgrade to the RS4 KO4 turbos, but it honestly is not really worth it... oh and the intercoolers are side mounts for a reason, a FMIC is not as efficient..

I say keep the tC, its reliable and cheap enough and save your money for something else...

Thread revival... but, I just bought and S4 and am now debating on which car to keep... The S4 is crazy fast with a chip, but has 104K miles... luckily, it's been well taken care of and seems to have a lot of life left in it...

tc - that audi is gonna start taking CHUNKS out of the wallet very very soon, especially those stock bi turboes where an 09 tc will last you 150k more miles

Man, not only is it costly to keep a German car running... but it's complicated. And complication means labor costs.

But it's an S4. When it runs, it's amazing.

I used to be an owner of a '97 Audi A4 12v. 160,000 miles. They need attention and a lot of it. Almost every suspension component was fried on that car along with the cooling system. Unfortunately that totals out the car itself. Not sure what it is about Audis but the driving experience alone is worth being a whipped little b!tch to its maintenance demands.
If anyone on here has an A4 B5, this is a FAQ that reeeaaally helped me out:

Nice pair of cars. Here is what steered me away from an Audi S4. Years ago I was looking into Audi Assured S4's. 30-50k Miles. I spent sometime trading advice with a Buddy who is an Audi Master Mechanic and also happened to do the maintenance work for all of my friend's German cars at a steep discount (yes.....) . He flat out said that he would be hesitant to do any work on that car for me if it needed it.... and would for damn sure not do anything to it if it were modded.

He avoided those things like the plague at work.... and he really hated it when he was actually stuck working on one. One example he gave was that to do a straight turbo swap it was a 18-20 hour book job...... yeah f that.

They are amazing cars that do run well though ;)
