Default solutions to saving gas

besides not driving at all, carpooling, etc, do you guys know other ways to keep a tank to last longer? from what i've heard from a friend, i should shift at 3x rpm, leave a/c off w/ windows open when driving pretty slow and run a/c while on the highway to decrease drag.

any other ideas?

As AAA and your grandparents will be happy to tell you, maintain proper tire pressures.

where did the high gas prices go....

um, if you overinflate your rear by 5psi you can reduce the contact patch of the rear tires... causing less friction on trips... just a thought

WoHoo! Has has been $1.96 here for about a week. I don't care how fast I burn gas now. I wish it was this cheap during the summer when I was hitting up the strip and road course.

However, if you want to save gas, the best thing to do is change the way you use the gas pedal. Like someone said above, act like there is an egg under the accelerator.

Also, I believe 55mph is the "sweet spot" for our car. That speed gives you optimal miles per gallon. Drive as close to that as possible and watch your MPG climb (even if you get passed by everyone else on the road).

I would think cruise control would help if you have it, right?

And btw....gas round here is like 2.16....so glad it went down...still I believe it should be under 2 bucks though....

Wait until elections are over. Gas prices always fall before elections and then shoot right back up afterwards. Let's all thank the government for making us think that 2.20 for gas is cheap!

Also, try to keep the engine in the 2200-2600 RPM range. This is a good range... I find that anything under 2k is wasteful.

Remember its not always as simple as getting into 5th as quickly as possible.

Driving with windows open is not great for gas mileage. Just think about how much air circulates around your head while they're open..

Windows closed. A/C off (weather permitting). Cruise control. Avoid speeding on the highway (doing the speed limit (yes 55-60) will give you a LARGE increase in MPG). Shift around 3K. Don't stomp on the gas pedal. Driving in really hot weather (90+ degrees) will also hinder your MPG. Cool/Dry weather is better for combustion.

Well, you're going to get better MPG at 60mph then 80mph on the highway. That's a definite.
