tC w/ hitch and bike rack PHOTOS
So, I've been thinking of getting a bike rack for the tC for a while... I went the hitch route for a couple different reasons.
- Easy to put on / take off
- Doesn't damage paint like roof rack feet do
- Better gas mileage
- No wind noise
- Will not drive the bike into the garage door...like I most likely wood w/ roof rack
- no reaching up to the roof to secure bike - and removing front wheel only to store in car
- No handlebars and stem full of bugs
- Rack is easily interchangable between friends cars w/ both 1-1/4" and 2" hitch receivers.
- Curt Hitch and Thule DoubleTrack rack = $400 (Yakima rack w/ 2 trays = $700)
The hitch is from Curt Mfg. and was wicked easy to install...took me about 45 minutes (would have been much faster w/ a unibit drill bit to enlarge access hole in frame.) The hitch is a class-I hitch. It holds 200 lbs or tows 2k lbs. Bike rack ways roughly 30 olbs and bike is 18 lbs...no worries.
The rack is rock solid and doesn't bounce, shimmy or shake...it holds the bike like crazy and can lock if you have the Thule locks.
All-in-all a great choice if you're looking for an alternative to the roof rack.

It is not like it is for looks, it is for his bike. He uses it and it has better function. To me that would be a lot easier than lifting a bike up on the roof one, running the risk of damaging something.

Seriously though, I agree that the rack is not very aesthetically pleasing...but I'm ok with that. It is very utilitarian in this case and will be off the car more than it is on.
