Default Is this true? (first oil change)

this service technician at the dealer told me that my first oil change wasn't recommended untill I hit 5,000 miles. I thought a regular oil change was supposed to be done every 3,000 miles. and the first oil change was supposed to be done around 1,000-2,000 miles after ur break in period. I am about to hit my 2,000 mile period but I was wondering when I should get my oil changed.

Yea, my dealer told me the same thing. I'm currently at 1030 miles, and want to change my own oil, but I need someone to help me out as I've never done it before and don't have a jackstand or anything.

I really do think it should be changed before 5k... AFAIK they're not running synthetic in our engines, and the first oil change (right after break-in) is the MOST important oil change of them all

very first oil change should be around 2000 miles if not sooner.

just change it before it hits 5,000. no need to have it done too soon.

In the manual it should say when to get the first oil change....which is i think 5k miles.

On my G i went to get the oil change at 1.5k miles and the tech laughed and showed me my oil and it looked clear and he said to come back in 2k miles.

Well I wouldn't trust your scion dealer or service guy so much....but i would listen to the manufacture of the car.

i changed mine at 5k. you're not going to cause any damage if you don't change your oil.

Exactly Right!!! I can't believe all the mis information I've heard regarding this topic. Sure listen to the manufacturer. They only want to sell you another car asap. Sure listen to the dealer cause they get paid everytime you get it done there.

People have got to realize that as an engine "breaks-in" the new engine parts are getting aquainted which means metal shavings. Do you really want that crap left in the engine for 5K??? I think not! Get the oil changed after 1K and switch to Mobil 1 at the same time. Isn't the longevity of your engine worth the little bit of extra $$$$s?

Interesting opinion Jethro... I'd like to think that the Q&A process along with the manufacturing process has advanced sufficiently to the point where my car's maker doesn't need to lie to me to keep the repeat business.

Look, my dealer told me 5k miles because (and he specifically mentioned this when I asked about the 3k mile rule) "It's only every 5k miles if you get it changed here because we use synthetic oil." Now, he mentioned the word synthetic before I did. Considering he owns a supercharged tC himself, I doubt the guy would lie FOR the company to the detriment of his customers.

Anyway, I'm going with 5k as I do believe it was in the manual (or one of the official papers I got with my tC). I'll double check later but I even recall seeing the service schedule saying 5k, 10k, 15k, etc. All in 5k increments.

I doubt the manual and dealership would sell you a car then tell you to maintanance it incorrectly. Common sense would say that Scion would like to sell more cars. If the dealership and the manual told me incorrect things I would not be very happy. Customer's that aren't happy don't recommend cars to their friends, not only that they tell there friends to never buy that vendors product. I doubt Scion\Toyota wants that.
5K does sound weird, but to say that Scion would tell you things that would shorten the life of your car is crazy.

I have wondered how auto manufacturers can state these intervals as well. It's sorta unrelated, but did you know MB has 13k service intervals? Yea, no kidding! I believe its about $845 or so for each of those service intervals, but still, its per 13k. I know they use Mobil 1, but ???

5k or 6 months.. whichever is first.. that's what is stated in the service manuals.. and yeah.. why would scion tell us to maintain our cars wrong.. it will be bad for their business..

my odo just reads 2700 mi but since it will be 6 months next month then an oil change is recomended....
