Hey, if you're not comfortable trusting someone's opinion on a website for your cars livlihood, then don't. Go do some research on your own and find out the answers.

Personally what I've found (and do your own research, don't take this as gospel) is that the 3k rule from literally decades ago is no longer valid, but just as much a "rule" as is the premium gas "rule" is for many cars. Not bogus per se, just unnecessary. Anyway, like I said, go do your research and tell us what you find. I bet you'll be surprised either way.

It's NOT necessarily wrong. It's just not in the best interest of your car reaching 300 K plus like my box will on the original motor. I don't understand all the hesitation at just doing the first oil change at 1K to be on the safe side. Are funds that tight that you can't take some wiser advise than the dealership? Whatever ,it's your cars do what you want. What do I know??? I only have owned 3 vehicles that have surpassed 300K and one that went 500K and still not burning oil.

yeah 3k oil change is old news now a day. My aunts BMW requires oil change every 10k miles. Our tC requires 5k intervals, like stated above MB says 13K. Honda I believe says 7500 miles. Mini Coopers 10K miles.....
I can go on forever.

HOWEVER if you drive your car HARD, then changing the oil a little bit early is not a problem, since rapid breakdown can occur, not so much in synthetic...
Just because oil companies say 3000miles and car manufacture says 5k, 10k, etc miles. So whos the companying trying to make money?

I will do my first oil change before 5k for the record.

But any car will reach 300K if you want to spend enough money on it.

I really do think it should be changed before 5k... AFAIK they're not running synthetic in our engines, and the first oil change (right after break-in) is the MOST important oil change of them all

you do have a jack its under your drivers seat

Can you really change your oil too often?? Aside from wearing out the threads on your drain plug, there can be no harm in changing it early. I have 1500 miles on my xB and i just picked up a case of Mobil 1. Now all i need is a filter and she's on full synthetic. I plan on keeping it a long time so i'll be changing the oil regularly and using sythetic. I drive less than 10k per year so i'll be changing it approx. every 8 months. The Mobile 1 in Porsches say it's good for 15,000 miles but i'll be changing mine about double that.

Money has nothing to do with getting 300K out of the original motor without opening it up and only spending $s on regular maintenance. oil changes, filters and plugs. That's it.

Jethro, chill out bro I'm not knocking your advice. I just prefer that everyone be as informed as possible. Is that a bad thing? Ever? The guy wasn't asking advice for the best performance or to save the most money either way, he was just asking so I was just answering that the dealer very likely WAS NOT lying to him maliciously so they could get repeat business, as was mentioned earlier in the thread.

I'm glad you've had cars that have run 300k+, that's pretty impressive to be honest. As for the money comment, I'm not a cheapskate, but do the math. By 50k miles, an oil change at roughly $20 has cost you $333 versus every 5k costing you $200. $133 isn't a LOT but then, I'd sure rather put that into some decent component speakers myself.

Again, no hating here, just want people to learn for themselves all their options.

Not hating, just can't understand all the resistance to doing the first oil change at 1k then every 5k after that with Mobil1 and Toyota filter to ensure maximum duribility from their cars. It's only an extra 25 bucks for Gods sake.

Aah, so at 1k and then every 5k? See, that's hardly anything and I could go for that. I'm at 460'ish miles at the moment. I wonder if my dealer uses or has Mobile 1 (apparently that's the universally loved oil here?). Anyway, the 3 coupons I got for free oil changes from my dealer were a nice bonus so maybe I'll save those for the 5k's and go get the Mobile 1 at 1k.

Thanks for the advice Jethro.

Since there seems to be some people watching this topic, I got an off the topic question. This is my first NEW car, when is it safe to beat on the clutch? Launch hard, shift hard etc? Should I treat it like a new aftermarket clutch? Does the stock need more time? Less time?

No prob Mine however will never see the dealer unless something major goes wrong before warr. is up. I even tried to cash in those so called free oil changes for this fact. I'd even be willing to give them to someone that trusts their baby to the dealership but you can't transfer them. Oh Well
