Default Trunk Flew Open

ok my story goes like this ...

im coming home from school like at 10 at night. im going 40mph down this not so busy street. All of a sudden my trunk just goes flying open. Im like wtf .... so i immediatley stop in a parkway and close it and open it again and close it. It seemed ok and i still had everything in my trunk. But what im most concerned if this ____ happens again. I do have the trunk rattling noise and im curious to see if that could be the problem ... i checked the lock when you close it and it seemed to be ok. And i know for sure that i closed it all the way before i had left to school because i put my school bag in the trunk and closed it .. but it was wierd because when i had gone in my car the lights didnt go off in the car. So i opened the drivers door and closed it again. still lights were on. So i got out and closed my trunk and got back in and closed the door and the lights turned off. But while i was driving the top light in front was flickering on and off like if the trunk was still open. It would flicker everytime i hit a bump. but when to late to trunk just opened..

Pretty crazt huh ...

Not really. The hatch rattle was always suspected to be linked to the latch mechanism. The trunk never latched tightly.

Take it to the dealership and have them fix it.

BTW- wouldn't something like "Trunk Flew Opened" be a much better and more descriptive title for this thread than "WHAT THE HELL!!!"

I totally agree with this one -- THANK YOU! It would be nice if people were more descriptive with their subject lines!!

Now, rolstc... about that hatch problem.. What was in your trunk? Was anything tall enough that might prevent the hatch from closing? Are you using the cargo cover? is it in it's place? -- I found my hatch wasn't closed all the way one time and, since i've never had to deal with it before, it took me like 5 minutes to figure out that the cover wasn't sitting in its correct position..

Good luck.

Honestly, I hope I don't have to peice this together for you, but here goes.

Both doors and your hatch have an sensor that is pushed in when the door/hatch is closed. Whenever the sensor is pushed out, that means a door or hatch is open. When you hit the bump, and your dome light turns on.

It flying open could be cause of two things:

Latch is too high or too low = take it to the dealer
You didn't close the hatch all the way = pay attention

The 'cargo cover' I'm talking about is the lightweight removable panel that is suspended between the rear seats and the hatch. Check the fittings on either side of the trunk area.. there are two ***** on the cover that should fit into the brackets in the trunk.

One morning a few months ago when it was pretty cold out my hatch locking mechanism wouldn't lock the hatch closed. It acted like the lock was frozen open. I drove about 5 miles with it like that and it never flew open but of course when going over bumps it would blink the red light on the dash. When I came out of the store the sun shining on the car must've warmed it enough that when either closed it or locked/unlocked it it finally held. It hasn't happened again.

How cold was it at the time it was frozen?

One thing I do worry about is how the trunk open button is mechanical. Seems like one more thing to break in 10 years time. That's just me and my paranoia, I had too many problems with my mx-6
