i fill it when the needle gets just above "R" at that point ive usually driven right around 330-350 miles.
edit: i just figured out the mileage from my tC's last fill up...339mi/11.85gal for my last fill up comes to 28.6 mi/gal.

I'm one of those thats lazy and waits for the light to go on, then keeps pushing it off because I don't feel like going to the gas station. Hah. I just filled mine up yesterday and it was $32. Bleh.

Call me crazy, but I fill it up when I'm almost empty.
I commute 40 miles each direction to work. There are gas stations on each end of the trip but none in the middle, so I just have to think ahead. When I start the car, I look at the gauge and decide whether I have enough to make the trip, or if I need to fill up before I go- if there is more than 1/4, I know I can make it. Generally speaking, I rarely fill it up before the light comes on.
I've used basically that same mentality since I started driving, and I've never run out of gas.
My average fill-up is just over 12 gallons, and I usually get about 340 miles on a tank.

The furthest Ive taken it (on numerous occassions) is to where the Needle is physically pointing at the low gas LED. At that point, I filled up to find I had approx half a gallon left.
I never top off, to save the charcoal element.
And please, delete your spread sheet, enjoy your car, and stop counting! :D

i havent filled it yet and I've done 17,000 miles. The only thing you have to fill is oil when you change it and any of the other fluids. There is a gas glitch in this car which lets you drive it until 100,000 without ever having to fill it up. When it gets down to 1/4 or the reserve light comes on just keep on driving. You just have to trust me that your car will keep going...
nahh but seriously I fill it when the light comes on...

A reminder with warm weather on its way: Try to fill up your car when the outside temp is low, mornings or nights not during the middle of the day. The pumps are calibrated at about 60 degrees and when it is over that, the gas actually expands and you will get less gas for the same gallon reading. The gas companies know they get an advantage because the temps in the US are often over that. In Canada, they have regulations and equipment in place to keep it correct. Do you know why? Because the cold temps in Canada makes this a loss for the oil companies so they fixed it...
