Sorry, the math won't work for xB - different gear ratios. But I'd guess that the drop is closer to 1000 rpm on 1-2 shift, that's if the car is not accelerating while you are shifting. If the car keeps gaining speed (which is generally the case) then the necessary drop is smaller.

They should vary by when you depress the clutch pedal (what rpm you're at) and what gear you're going to. Other than that, you don't get anymore acceleration.

I have a question about the actual shifter... do you guys find it really easy and smooth to shift gears? Or is there a little resistance sometimes? Almost like a grinding but not really grinding. I find that sometimes the shifter moves really easily and other times it takes some work on my tC.

When I choose to shift depends on how hard I want to accelerate. If I want to hit it hard, I run until the tach needle hits the yellow with my foot planted on the floor. If I'm just cruising around town, I shift between 3k and 3.5k.

The tC has a very close ratio gearbox, and very low overall gearing. I frequently skip fourth altogether because third takes me to most around town speeds without any drama. The 1 - 2 shift can be jerky at low rpm, it works a little better to go a little higher (3.5k), except when the engine is cold (it is VERY BAD for service life to rev a cold engine hard). I find myself in third and fifth most of the time.

My only personal problem with the shifter is ergonomic. It's about 15mm too far forward, so I occasionally miss third. I had the same problem with my '88 GTS Corolla. A TRD short shifter fixed the problem. I'd put a short shifter in the tC, but my wife is new to manuals and it would not be good for her.

BTW, hoping a lightweight flywheel will make the shifts smoother is wishful thinking. My Supra has had an 11 lb flywheel and currently has an HKS triple plate clutch. Neither of them made shifting smoother or easier, in fact, they require a great deal MORE attention to drive smoothly.

When you really learn to drive a stick you won't have to pay attention to the tac or the speedo when shifting. The car will let you know by the way it sounds and feels.

Except that the tC is so quiet stock that you can't hear the engine at sub-3K rpms even if you have the radio at volume 15 or so...

yeah, the TRD exhaust makes all the difference... it's easier to tell now.
