um for the record, brake horse power is not the same as wheel horse power, brake horse power is measured at the crank/flywheel, with an engine dyno. wheel horse power is measured at the wheels with a chassis dyno. there is always a loss of horse power from the crank to the wheels. manufactures give you the brake horsepower numbers on the spec sheet.

slightly wrong on the BHP. Brake horse power is what manufacturers use to rate a car. Also what people call base horse power. BHP is more like EHP (engine horse power).

Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components. Thus the prefix "brake" refers to where the power is measured: at the engine's output shaft, as on an engine dynamometer. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. An engine would have to be retested to obtain a rating in another system. The term "brake" refers to the original use of a band brake to measure torque during the test (which is multiplied by the engine RPM and a scaling constant to give horsepower).

stolen from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower
I wouldn't trust wikipedia on this one. I always thought BHP was BRINK horse power. As in the maximum hp an engine could make, then the rpm is listed at whatever rpm the max power was made. (e.g. BHP- 161 at 4000rpm)

It's brake. All horsepower measurements are reported in max hp. You really think a manufacturer would use a word like brink?

And this thread is OLD.
