Default Would a slight over revved hurt my engine?

OK I was heading to work today, in this long industrial road. It's virtually empty, not even the cops go there on weekends. So I come to the light where I'm supposed to turn and I start downshifting sequentially. Since I was alone, I didn't worry about my brake lights showing. Anyways, when I rev-matched from 3rd to 2nd, I think I might have done it a bit too early. I really couldn't tell, but the needle did hit 6K RPM. I was off the throttle when this happened. I was just tapping the gas and downshifting. So now I have two questions:

1. What's the rev-limiter on a 2006 tC?

2. How do auto makers decide on rev-limiters? Do they like set them so that any amount over the limit will damage an engine, or do they set a buffer zone between the rev-limiter and the engine speed where damage starts to happen?

You're fine, don't worry about it. I'm not positive but I think the rev limiter is 6500 on an 06 and 6800 on an 07. There is a fairly large buffer zone I'm sure. I know I've bounced off the rev limiter a fair share of times.

a slight overrev shouldnt hurt. I hit 7k or so a couple of times on accident heel-toeing into a turn on sebring raceway to no ill effects.

what did cause problems is when i went from redline in third down into 2nd instead of 4th. The car still ran, but had an audible knocking noise. Took it to the dealer and i ended up mis-seating the 2 intake side valves in the #3 cylinder. Ended up replacing everything but the exhaust side camshaft and the head itself.... all the other components were replaced.

05-06 is 6250
07 is 6500

Just remember, this is a toyota engine. It can never die, only the actors who play it!

[that was for the simpson and DUFFMAN fans LOL]

The rev limiter in the 07 cuts the engine rather than bounce at red line. Is this the same of 05-06?

Hitting 6K isn't going to damage the engine, but years of engine-braking will; try using the brakes to stop the car.

i did that in my xa but i caught it before i went totally into gear.

i bet that only hurt your engine because the ecu cut fuel and the engine tried to kill the rpms with itself but your cars momentum kept it going. if your engine would have freely-spun or had an auto clutch in feature if that happens, you woulda been ok

There was a thread about this just a few days ago. Engine braking is fine.

Apparently these people think that oil stops flowing, and that the chance of lightning striking you increases 100 fold when you engine brake.

V6 or V8? My American Muscle buddy always puts Mustangs above everything, and we argue all the time. V6s are slow as *****, I can take them on my 18"s.

I have been going 65 and downed from 5th to 3rd, then once i was in 4th i shifted at 105 into 5th, never felt it limit, but i did feel a power drop once it was at 102 or 103.

The thing that worried me was that when I rev matched from 3rd to 2nd the car jerked forward a bit, kinda like when you under rev, and I look down at the tac and it was at 6K RPM. So I'm guessing I must've overreved it a little and the rev limiter kicked it just as I released the clutch. Either way the car runs find, still pulls like always, and no weird noises. Probably not a big deal, but the thing that got me worried was reading about this guy who overvved his M3 from 3rd gear red line to 2nd gear, and his car ran fine for a while, but then the engine suddenly exploded coming off a freeway off-ramp. His engine ran fine, but he had weakened his internals to the point where his engine became a ticking time bomb. My overreved wasn't anywhere near as bad, but it's still one of those things that's constantly on your mind.

As for engine braking, the manual actually recommends doing on long downhill roads.

BTW Top Gear just reviewed the Mustang GT500, and they pretty much tore it to pieces (not literally). However they praised the Roush (SP?) Ford Mustang. Their biggest gripe with the Shelby is that it has all this power with no upgrades to the suspension or brakes. It doesn't even have an LSD.

I got a co-worker at work who doesn't understand the whole "Scion theory" meaning a well built car made by Toyota and they sell them for such a great price. He's always laughs at me for owning a "Piece of sh*t" and I got seriously got ripped off. Tonight I admitted my car including taxes, extra accessories, and fees; my Scion's bill was 20,000 and he couldn't believe it but I didn't tell him it's price tag was 17,700-ish. He just bought a used '05 Mustang GT for 20,000. So its been worst ever since he has owned it. I just hate hearing that...cause tC's aren't terrible at all; they are well built made Japanese cars. You get good power for your buck..and better gas mileage too as small bonus.
