Default Do I Need To Replace Brake Hardware Too? (Tech Input Needed)

Hey guys,

Just ordered some new rotors and pads and they should be showing up soon. I've done brakes ages ago and have read up on the DIY procedure for brakes and rotors on the Tc. Seems very straightforward, but I have a question about the pad hardware itself...

Should it too be replaced? I'm referring to parts 04945/04947 (fronts) and 04946/04948 (rears). From what I can tell in the exploded diagrams, these are shims that cover the outsides of the pads as they rest in the calipers, right?

I've heard that if not replaced, they could cause noise, etc. but I'm not too sure how factual of a statement that is. Any input would be great. I'd rather know I need these and just buy them from the dealer, rather than get everything installed and find out I really did need them!

If they're not damaged, just reuse the old shims, they don't need to be replaced every time you change pads and/or rotors.

Cool. That's kind of what I was hoping to hear. I've only got 30k on the car and this will be the first change out. Thanks for the heads up.

x2. That's what I did when I switched out my rotors and pads.
One of the best upgrades I've done to the tC by far!

i can't wait to upgrade. should be nice to have drilled and slotted rotor and new brakes all the way around! i was thinking of getting speed bleeders too, just to make things easier...And since I've got OCD pretty much, I'll probably do a complete flush on the brake fluid. I was reading somewhere on here that it's a good idea to replace it every 2 years or so. I'm definitely past that.

put it this way, at my dealership, we replace them every time we do brakes, they are a couple bucks and are a good insurance against brake squeal, but when i changed my own brakes i used the old ones. would i change them? sure.
is it important? nah.

I called my local dealership this morning and ordered up complete front and rear brake shim hardware and clips, etc. I figured, what the hell, if I'm going to replace most everything else, I might as well do the hardware too.

In case anyone is interested, here are the part numbers and prices that I was quoted from the dealership:

04945 - $14.81
04946 - $16.90
04947 - $12.75
04948 - $12.61

So for $57.07, you've got OEM brake hardware for fronts and rears.
