I also have the stock Potenzas with about 22,000 on them and this week it rained ice in the dallas area and I was able to control my car but I still kept sliding all over the road! it was crazy, planning to get new tires soon.

 

i have the stock tires with about 8100 miles on them, no big complaints but i do hate them, i just dont have the money to go out and buy some winter tires when i wont be snowing for a long time *i hope so anyways lol* i hate the snow. i cant wait till i move outta new england i hate it here lol. stupid cold/snow/winter/ice/slush/cold ugh!

 

Last year in Portland, Oregon we had an Ice Storm (I know not snow) that fell in January. Everything was iced, and in my stock potenzas at the time, I made it up a nice incline gaining some momentum. It was crazy, my car was only 4 months old @ the time, I was scared that I was going to drive into a ditch. I was stuck @ work and had to drive about 20 mile home!

 

Drove in the snow yesturday with my yoko's, car handled awesome, just drive in the right gear and dont slam on the brakes. Very impressed with my tC. Glad I bought a 5spd, makes driving in it so much easier.

 

We got about an inch of ice yesterday and i couldn't even get the car out of our neighborhood. The tires just kept spinning. I have the stock tires still on it and i am going to get snow tires when these ones wear down. I even had a hard time turining into my garage last night.

 

I dont think any tires except studded tires handle OK on ice .

 

In the future, Im just gonna invest in a NASCAR pit team for my garage that just watches the weather for me and changes my tires accordingly. Should be a great investment and Ill always have the appropriate tires on for the days weather. My $.02

 

NO tires handle well on ice. That is why ice is so much worse than snow. I dont care what tires you have, unless they have steel spikes they will suck horribly on ice.

 

We got 7 inches of snow here and I made it to work just fine with the Potenzas with 15k on them. Its no big deal.

Anyone notice people that complain they are unsafe in the snow are usually from places that it doesnt snow much like the southeast?

 

My grandma lives in Louisville and we went there to visit in the winter a few years. They got like an inch of snow and the city pretty much shuts down. We get 7 inches here and they are like wtf you are 2 minutes late for work?

 

Well I complained about it (until I got snow tires) and I'm living in Michigan, right on the lake, so you can't say that about me. And I grew up in Chicago and New York, so I know what snow is.

 

Driving in the snow is fine if you are the first person who drives on it. Once it is packed by other vehicles then you stock tires arent good enough. The the water freezes at night and you are screwed.

 

We got about 4 more inches (supposed to get 8 or more before it stops tomorrow morning) last night... no issues this morning on my worn out potenzas. If you arent good at driving in snow they would suck pretty bad... but if you are good at snow and/or grew up driving on dirt roads like a bat out of hell (redneck rally ) and know how to handle sliding then they arent too bad. If you get off into some deep stuff you will most likely be stuck.. they dont bite very well. But I have decided that I can manage ok this winter for the most part. Next winter it should never see the snow (as was the case most of the first winter I had it). We are buying something with 4wd for my fiance to drive and I get my winter car back (96 saturn sc1). I have to admit, the saturn is like a tank in the snow.. drives right through it with no issues whatsoever. The worst it saw was driving in 11 inches.... pushing snow like a plow... I was impressed! Plus, salt doesnt hurt the mostly ABS body.

My advice to anyone who doesnt have much driving experience, or anyone really that will be driving on snow and ice, is to wait for a good snow or ice storm, find a good, big deserted parking lot that the cops wont run you out of in 5 minutes, and play like hell. Practice driving forward, ebraking and releasing and then straightening back out, steering with the ebrake and gas pedal to recover from understeer and anything else you can think of. When on icy surfaces you really are steering mostly with the accellerator, so get really used to that and the way your car handles on the ice. After a while you find that you are a much better foul weather driver. Plus, it is just fun as hell It also really helps if you have experience driving a RWD in snow as well.

 

I love doing a U turn when on snow lol.. i go loke 10mph, turn my wheel a little, pull the parking break.. let go parking break when you have turned 180 hehe.

 

^^ Yep! The tC, other than the potenzas, is very predictable on the snow, very fun! I can bump the ebrake to get it sliding and pretty much use the gas to keep it at whatever angle I need.. too much fun

 

mine handled great in the snow last year in MD. now i'm in GA, no snow

 

I grew up over there in Muskegon. You get lots more snow there than in Detroit. You get good at snow driving by the lake or you stay inside of 4 months.

If only I could use that to get out of going to work and still get paid for it.

 

For High Performance all season tires there are only two choices. Avon Tech M550 A/S or Perelli P Zero Nero M+S. Both are available in the 215/45/17 size, both have a "W" Speed Rating, Both have a similar load index, both have a MAX PSI over 50 Both are Taction Rating "AA" Temp "A" and the list goes on....Infact only notible difference is Parelli have a higher tred ware, are a hair better in the dry and cost about $25-60 more a tire depending on where you shop. The Avon are a hair better in the snow and cost less. I got the Avon's from Tire Rack $98 tire+ Shipping.......I love them....Have driven them in 3-4" snow already w/ no problem.

yeah no kidding... my relatives live in columbia SC and they got an inch or two the whole city was shut down for like 2 days!!! I agree with the statement that the drive by wire system makes it hard for you to rev match in between shifts and that the tc does have a tourquey motor but hey i'm not complaining....
