Default Road Racing Suspension Questions

New to the forum (hi everyone) and have looked through a bunch of the suspension threads (Buyers Guide: Scion tC Suspension thread is brilliant), and seem to find a product gap between shocks/suspension for the street or HPDE driving, and what's available for more serious SCCA/NASA-type road racing.

That's not to say those items don't exist*, or aren't in a thread here I've yet to find, but I'd welcome input, links, or references to any manufacturers that produce serious competition shocks, camber plates that offer a ton of negative adjustment (3-5deg) and suspension arms for an '07 tC.

Hotchkis sway bars are items I will buy, but I'm needing knowledge on WTB the other items mentioned.

* I know Progress supplies the Scion Celebrity cars with dampers, but don't know how 'race' I'd consider them. I'm open to input, though.

Thanks in advance.

Progress also supplies the coilovers for the Jackson-Dawson Scion tC raced by Dan Gardner (NASA), of course, they have been re-valved and re-sprung for serious competition. The only other adjustable coilovers I would recommend for wheel-to-wheel racing the tC are TEIN and KW, and you'll have to contact the manufacturers directly to have them re-valved and re-sprung to your specifications.

As for camber plates, I'm not sure sure what the range of adjustment for the TEIN camber plates are, and J-D Racing uses K-MAC, and they are available through Wild Pony Motorsports: http://www.wildponymotorsports.com/

I'm pretty sure Koni does a lot a re-valving for people, so they might be able to do that for their tC shocks.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't a coil over setup be a little more benifical for road racing (more dampening adjustability) ?

Absolutely--it's the lack of pure road racing solutions for the tC that sees a lot of 'tuner' shocks being used.

That's what I thought. Let us know what you end up going with. I'm sure later on I'll be able to change out of my setup now with something more aggressive.

i would recommend going against progress simply because you can not adjust the dampening, and being at the race track, without dampening you will have a hard time getting a proper suspension set up.

the JD race team uses progress coilovers, and they had a very hard time during the first few races because they couldnt adjust the dampening and it was just to soft, eventually they had them revalved, and it got better, but it would have been better if they could have just adjusted it on the spot when they needed it.

Your best bet is like 2fast4you said, go with either KW or TEIN, i personally prefer TEIN just because of the local support, and the fact that when my the coilovers blow, i can have them rebuilt.

I plan to eventually start road racing, after i get my suspension done, and i have already started auto-x'ing and i can tell you that its definatley a rush, my plans thus far are:

-Tein SS+P Coilovers, no need for EDFC as they are set at full stiff until i need otherwise
-5zigen 17x8 FN01R-C w/ Falken 245/40 Tires
-Hotchkis Front and Rear Sway Bar
-Ingalls ETD and 4 Point Rear Brace
-Battery relocation to the rear hatch area
-C/F Hood & Hatch just to lighten things up a little

also, a thing that necessarily isnt a suspension mod, but it will help you out alot when racing is a nice racing seat, you dont want to be trying to hold on while taking a sharp corner, you want to be focused on driving, and flopping around wont help that at all.

Any help on the worst MPG experienced, and the power output/tune of your car would be greatly appreciated.

if your concerned about mpg, then your in the wrong game.

i am N/A and i average about 18-20mpg street driving, and thats me driving somewhat conservatively.

I got just about 11MPG this weekend VIR full course. I usually get about 28 highway mpg. With a supercharger I don't know. A friend with his Mazdaspeed 3 went through a whole tank in 76 miles. So boost + track = $$$

Also lets here some more suggestions for coilover options as I realize I need to do a good deal of suspension work if I want to have more fun at the track....

Great job, your team picked one hell of a driver line up!

I hope you make it to SPEED World Challenge, I've been dying to see a tC race in that series.

Thanks. It's my team and my driver lineup--if we do well, I get the glory. If we don't, you know who to yell at...

Win as a team, lose as a team. Either way, I'll be cheering for you win or lose.

Yes--all of the carbon bits will be available through our partners at Kognition Design, and all of the suspension bits will be available through TC Design, including the Moton shocks.
