What exactly does pillow top mounts do?
I know it sounds like a stupid question...
So when buying coilovers, some brands come with pillow ball top mounts. These coilovers have adjustments that are to be installed perpendicular to the front of the car.
From my understanding, they help with camber adjustment, right? So when installing coilovers, do you just adjust the top to the farthest negative camber then when getting an alignment, you would adjust it from the bolts below?
Can someone just school me on pillow ball top mounts really fast?
Im so confused.

if youre racing the car or running aftermarket wheels you may need to adjust camber. other than that it should stay at 0. also, when you drop the car you may experience negative camber. you can fix it with the pillow ball mounts.

Small addition, you also don't have to re-use your factory non-adjustable top mounts. Also they can be adjusted when you get an alignment instead of buying cam bolts, etc

Rear pillow ball mounts on the tC really server no purpose. Front pillow ball mounts vs are stock ones also make no difference. The only benefit of front pillow ball mounts is if the mount plate includes camber adjustment. Honestly my JICs let me adjust a few degrees for the camber but i leave it at Zero most of the time as its a daily driver and sometimes a couple degrees negative for looks. Most people run negative camber for looks. The benefit of camber is to try to adjust back to 0 so you don't eat up tires. Lowering / slamming the car can eat the inner part of your tires unless you adjust back or close to 0 degrees. Also, I have found using stock mounts gives a softer ride if you don't like a rough ride.

Prolly depends...From what I've seen on the coils I've owned, most likely not. They all have different manufacturing techniques which causes the mount points to be slightly different.

Alright cleaned up...I re-read your question as well, not just going off the title .
Yes you will need to mount them with the adjustment perpendicular to the front of the car. I put my adjustment in the middle, and went from there. The mounts will allow the adjustment the camber, and you should have factory adjustment front and rear factory for toe as well.
