here's a readout of the different tire sizes. the top is the stock 215/45/17, middle is 225/35/20, and the last is 225/30/20.
for the rim itself, it will extend 6mm in and out. this means you'll have 6mm less clearance towards the strut and 6mm more towards the outside. this shouldnt cause many problems if at all.
i'd go for the 30 series, but do NOT run over anything rough. that's a very thin tire and will pop whe shocked by a pothole or something.

ya it takes a lot to pop the tire, im running the same on my xb and ran over a 4 x4 which trashed the rim but never popped the tire and they still hold air with no leaks cause im running on busted ones right now till the new ones come in

Another thing. No matter how safe you drive, you can not dodge every pothole----- especially on the interstate. If you are going 70 (the speed limit) and you hit the wrong pothole or bump, its a wrap.
I don't want to start a riot, but please believe I am speaking from very deep experience with the tC and 20s. I've had mine dropped on different sets of 20s and a couple of different springs. 20s are alright for everyday driving (except in Hampton, VA "pothole city"), but I wouldn't recommend them for traveling.
Normally I don't really care about petty issues like this, but I don't want someone to go through the same issues I went through.

munch said it............
tires are really well built, the will not just "pop" on a whim, you need to really hit something hard and fast like a pot hole that is 3 inches deep, i have run up to 24"s on my denali running what would be equivelent to a 30 series for a car (305/35-24 front and 315/25-24 rears) and never had an issue........
i think unless you run a 19,20 or above you really dont have first hand knowlege of the subject other then what a freind told you or what you read.
it takes skill to drive a car with large diameter rims and some people have it and some people don't you do have to pay attention and you cant drive like a idiot over railroad tracks etc.
i say run them and be happy
