Are 235/40/17 tires safe on 17x7.5 rims?
just like the thread title asks, are 235/40/17 tires safe on 17x7.5 rim?
are there ANY safety issues that i should worry about since i plan to autocross and track a lil bit?
also, would the tire stick out too much for the rim and look funny?
to my knowledge, 235's are possible for a 7.5 inch width, but would better suit an 8 inch width.
pics would help if anybody can provide them.
thanks for any help!

i wouldnt run them, they need at LEAST a 8" wheel.
the only risk you will have is when tracking the car or driving it really hard is that they can slip off of the wheel, i have seen it before, so its from experience.

I run a set of 245/45 v710 kumhos and some times a set of 245/40 A6 hoosiers on my Motegie Track_lite 17X7 wheels and I have had no problems for the last year and a half. In fact many autocrossers will run a wider than spec tire while racing with out any problems at all.
My SCCA class does not allow for me to go to a different wheel width so I can't upgrade.
I agree with tc909, if you are not worried about class restrictions you will always want to go with the tires recommended wheel with the insure that you get the maximum potential out of the tire.
By running a wider than spec tire your risk would be more of performance issue than a safety issue.
