Default n00b tire question: 225/35 and 225/40

Hi, i'm gonna be gettin some 18's most likely soon, so what is the difference between a tire 225/35 and 225/40. Which one is better for performance or just functionality.

The 40 is a taller tire. It may help soften the ride a tiny bit, but typically a lower profile tire will handle better. Don't go to low; you need some rubber to protect the rim.

Most people will have 225/40s on their 18s. That's what I run on both my sets of aftermarket rims. Its when you get into 19s is when you need the 225/35s. (Depending on drop.)

so would 40's be more practical as opposed to 35's? Also, will they still have good performance qualities (i plan to get Falken Fk452's)

225/40 is a popular size, so its easy to find cheap. 225/35 is a rare size, thus more expensive.

i run a 225/40/18 tire. that setup is like 3% larger overal than the stock 215/45/17 so the speedo is only off minimally (like 1.5 mph lower is displayed when your going 60). the extra sidewall is nice incase you have an oops with a curb or something.

225/40-18

The first number, 225, is the treadwidth in milimeters. Tread is 225mm.

The second number is the aspect ratio of the sidewall. In this case 40. This means the height of the sidewall is 40% the width of the tread.

And yeah, that last number is self explanitory.
