Default Powder Coating Masking & Prep-work

Hey, everyone! I'm looking into powder coating my stock wheels, and would like to know what you guys knew about masking it off. Looking online, I was able to find several different types of masking tape made specifically for powder coating. Does anyone have any advice/experience with masking and powder coating that would help me out? For instance, which type of tape works best? Do I have to mask first, then sand? Do I not sand at all?

Also, before powder coating the wheel, should I take off the balancing weights that are inside the rim? Will the wheel be unbalanced after I get it powder coated, because of the additional weight of the paint?

And, as always, any pictures people may have of completed powder coating that used masking would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for any help you may have!

Have a great day,
-Radar

I had good friend of mine powder coat my stock EMX's glossy black. Had to take EVERYTHING off the rim even the weights.
Powder coating does add weight but not enough to make the wheel unbalanced.
As for masking, I have no clue.....sorry hope that helps

By the way what color you going with?

well the best think i can do is simply sand it down 1st then mask it cuz if u mask it and sand it down u will have to re-mask it. as far as the best tape u can use 3m tape.
and this is the turn out for mine in an angle shot.

^^ those look like you did it with a rattle can not powder coating.

as for the top have the shop your taking it to get coated mask it off, you'll have to take out the valve stem, wheel weights and the tire (duh ) but you'll get the best finish that way, and when they are done just have the tires remounted and balanced, everything will be fine
