Default 3rd Gear

So I've been having this weird noise coming from my transmission. After a long trip it sounds like a rod trying to spin and vibrating at the same time. That's the best i can think of. There really is no sound I can think of that matches this. So recently I haven't been able to take my car to the 10k tuneup they do at my place for free, and it's been preventing me from shifting into 3rd gear every one in a while. Today on the way to work, I had to shift over 3rd because it wouldn't let me shift into it. Every time I'd try to engage the clutch it'd grind and kick me back out of it.

Any one else have these issues? It's got 12,800 miles on it.

My transmission groans at highway speeds and 3rd gear is extremely notchy, so you're not alone. Toyota says there's nothing wrong with it. I've got over 7000 miles on it now, but the problems started around 4000 miles.

Toyota skimped on the quality of the transmission a little bit to keep the TC affordable. The same thing happened on my Celica GT a few years back. If it's just third gear you are having the problem with, then it's (like 90% chance) probably the 3rd gear synchro that needs to be replaced. The part itself is cheap, but it might cost you a couple hundred dollars in labor to be fixed. Also, if/when you do get it fixed, replace the trans fluid with full synthetic Redline MT-90. It will shift way smoother and will protect much better against wear and tear in the future

It's a 2011 Scion tC purchased in June. This should be covered under warranty right?

It should be covered. Even if it was your fault, which I doubt. 5 years/60k miles

3/36 is everything except Powertrain. Powertrain is 5/60.

The powertrain is 60 mo/60k miles. The tranny is part of the powertrain.

In the future, never let them stick you like that. Most reputable dealers will give you a loaner while they fix your car under warranty conditions.

Update: They returned my car Friday. They replaced my 1st, 3rd and 6th gear. Technician Notes: The bushing spun off my shift fork and destroyed my 3rd gear. THEY covered it under the dealer and next time it will be through Scion corporate.

Could be a manufacturer defect with the manual cars. Not many people seem to have manual so let's see if this pops up.
