Default Building my own custom sub enclosure for cubby-holes

After trying to find a sub box to fit in my hatch cubby-holes and finding only outrageously priced JL and OEM solutions... or drastically overpaying a car audio shop to make them I decided to make them myself. I've worked with fiberglass before, but it's so time-consuming I really wanted to avoid it.

I'm installing a 10" in both holes (left and right) and will keep this thread updates with pics as I proceed. Hopefully it can be used for reference by someone. I might make a few of these as I have a couple of friends with the same problem, and since I'm already making molds for each side I can pull plugs easily.

Tonight was the first chance I had to get started. Tape off really well, then taped in foil to help act as a release agent. Light coat of resin first then a layer of mat, resin mat resin mat resin mat resin mat. Exciting stuff. After the mold cures tonight I'll pop it out and take a picture, then dremmel the edges.

Right, the tC2. The mold is way bigger than the box will be. I haven't trimmed it down yet.

Nice work! I would definitely be willing to purchase a set of these from you...however I want to put 8" subs instead of 10's...I'm sure that would be an easy work around when I am ready to pull the trigger.

Keep up the killer mods!

Looks like it's gonna be great work! You'd sell a ton of these once you get the mold down. I know this guy (me) would definetley buy a set

Between 40-50 cu ft. of mat and a gallon of resin, give or take 1/4 gallon.

The enclosure I'm building right now will be 1 cu ft as recommended by the manufacturer.

Future boxes will range depending on size of sub and desired bass (smaller for tighter bass, larger for deeper bass).

Would you be able to put one on each side and would they work for a 12 or too small? I would buy 2 if it works out.

yeah, I have two 10's so I'm making one for each side. With some minor adjustments they can be made large enough to accommodate 12"s

ok, so size wise it's good.....will it retain enough volume to not make the 12's sound like poop.

Yep, they can have enough volume to meet manufacturer's requirements for 12's

Measuring volume with PAINTBALLS. So much better than foam peanuts.

Mold pulled off panel.

So after layering 5-7 layers of 1.5 mat I pulled the mold and let it sit another day to reduce the tackyness on the back of it. Then applied body filler and started sanding.

After sanding I trimmed and sanded the edges to get a smooth curved lip. Tonight I'm forming the front panel for the sub box. There are several ways to do this. I decided to fill the half of the box I have with foam then shape it by cutting/sanding, then pulling the foam block out and prepping it, then layering fiberglass. After the fiberglass is layered on the foam and cured, you just pull it off and apply body filler and sand. More pics and updates coming soon.

Sure did. It was just over 1600 cubic inches, so I will be adding a little more space on the front panel to make the box 1728 cubic inches (1 cubic foot).
