DIY: Weighted Shift **** for ~ 20$
Ive wanted to get a unique shift **** for my Tc since I bought it. The M1 Abrams from TWM kept catching my eye, but I just couldn't justify the cost (Not knocking TWM, they make great stuff - im just broke).
Today I went and made my own shifter, and I figured I'd post some instructions up here for anyone wanting to do something similar.
Step 1: Buy a 2" soft steel ball bearing. Mine was 10$ on ebay (Link)
you could buy any size of bearing, but the stock **** is just over 2" so I bought this size/
Also buy a M12x1.25 Plug Tap. Mine was 12$ on ebay (Link)
Note that if you buy a Chrome bearing, or a Hardened bearing, you will Not be able to drill into it, as these materials are harder than most drill bits.
Step 2: Drill a hole! You will need to drill a 7/16 hole 1.5" into your bearing. It is best to start by drilling a small hole (like 3/16") to the right depth, then working up to 7/16". I did three steps in total: 3/16, 5/16, 7/16.
Make sure your bearing is fixed in place before you start drilling. I stuck mine in a vise, with a block of wood each side - then drilled the hole using a hand drill.
Step 3: Tap the hole. Stick the tap in a tap wrench or a set of vise grips and tap the hole. Go right until the tap bottoms in the hole. If your not sure how to tap a hole, look for a video on youtube. Incorrect technique will snap your tap off in the hole
Thats it, you now have your very own weighted shift ****! If your bearing is plain steel like mine, then it will eventually start to rust. A coat of paint or clear coat will keep it looking great and stop any rust>
Pics of the results below. I can take some of it installed if anyone's interested.
Let me know what you think!
