Cool Hidden iPod USB cable

I’m not going to make a DIY out of this…I just got sick of the iPod USB cable wrapped around the e-brake handle and flopping around on the center console. So I decided to share what I’ve done…

This is the cutout I made for the small end (USB side) of the cable.

This is what it looks like from inside the cup.

This is the plug I made for the cable hole…this is a foam tape used to tape up electrical connections in the automotive industry.

This is what the plug looks like from the inside.

This is what the plug looks like from the aft side of the cups.

This is how I routed the USB cable on the front side.

This is the routing detail of the aft end.

This is the notch that I cut in the front and how I routed the cable on the front side.

I put two zip-ties on the USB cable so it won’t come out and to hold the iPod up.

This is how it turned out in the front.

This is how it looks in the back.

This is how it looks with the iPod in place and the cable at the stop.

This is how it looks with the iPod stowed.

I would say you need a 5 foot cable so that you can comfortably pick up your ipod but not have too much slack.

You should splice into the cable leading up to the USB port so you don't have that USB cable plugged in at all. That would also leave the port free for other devices although only one device may be plugged in at a time.

Don't know if that would work, I think the head unit would freak out if you pluged something in to charge or something by accident

Like I said, only one device could be used at a time. Charging should still work for multiple devices as long as the current draw didn't exceed whatever the fuse limit is, assuming that it is in fact fused, but USB mode would not work with two devices plugged in.

I got the cable from Best Buy. I’m pretty sure that it is 3-feet long. I remembered looking at a 4-foot one and thinking that that would be way too long…it was a DYNEX…it was like $17.XX, plus tax…it was less than $20.00

I original plan was to do what I had finally done…then I thought I, could just go and splice it in to be real trick. So I bought a cable from Best Buy and cut it. That cable is completely shielded. When I got it apart, that inner cable is also completely shielded. Then I said, Oh ____! I went back to Best Buy to buy another cable…I just cut $20!

This is what I got…USB on one side and iPod on the other. I fed the USB side through the opening, because it is smaller.

Its the ECU for the interior lights and lighted door sills...you drill a hole through the plastic and bond it to the surface. I've got the door sills, but I needed it for the interior lighting kit...those are out of stock and no ETA!

2tCornot2tC - pull up the panel and pop out the USB connector, unplug the wiring on the back of it and then reattach it under the panel, pop the panel back on. Run to your local dealer and grab a blank plug for the tC2, $4. plug the blank in where the connector used to be. This way you will be completely hidden.

edit: do you have fog lights? you might still have the blank plug left over from the install

Yes I do have the fogs…
I did not think of it at the time…I did this mod when I had to take it all apart to install the ECU for the 7 color interior lights and the illuminated door sills.
But then thinking about it, I would loose the USB to plug in a friend’s mp3 player…this mod works for me.
