Ok, so I've seen some people talking oil lately and I want to know, is there a HUGE difference between the two? According to research, it seems Amsoil might be the better of the oils. Now I plan on doing my oil changes every 5k just for my own sake and yes I know some will say it's not necessary and a waste of money. I can get Mobil1 0-20 for $5.50 a quart and Amsoil 0-20 for $9.25 a quart. Is the $3.75 difference between the two worth it? Opinions and comments are welcomed! Real life experience from actual users is always better then advertisers.

Apologies if this is a repost, but I've searched for a thread on oil and couldn't really find any. Just some snippets of others talking a little about change intervals.

 

all that really matters is how much you want to pay. is there a difference, i'm sure there is. but will it seriously impact the reliability, longevity and performance of your engine? no. a quality lubricating oil, changed regularly will do just fine.

 

Amsoil is typically regarded as the better oil but both are excellent products. I don't consider the $3.75/qt price premium to be worth it. You're much better off investing your savings in a quality oil filter or pocketing the difference.

 

It's just like people comparing gas octanes.

 

I don't think that's a fair comparison. There actually is a real difference between grades of gas and high-compression engines actually require high octane fuel. Of course running 91 octane in a car specced for 87 is just wasting money. With synthetic oils it's more a matter of personal preference. A car that requires synthetic oil will run much the same with any quality synthetic.

 

Im using amsoil right now, and to be honest, i think my car ran smoother on mobil1. I have absolutely no scientic explanation or facts to back this up... im just saying. And i had really high hopes for the amsoil but oh well.

Amsoil hands down, when I run it in my car it runs so smooth.

 

I'm running Amsoil 0W20 in my tC2 now. Runs great. But in my research, I found the the Amsoil would likely hold up better under heavy abuse then the Mobil1. With light motorsports in mind, this was my choice.

But as mentioned, Mobil1 is not a full synthetic anymore. Amsoil is.

 

I have ran Mobil 1 full syn. 10w-30 and 5w-30 for over 15 years, as has my father. Neither of us are easy on our vehicles, but we do not abuse them either. Combined, we both put 100k and then some on more cars than I care to list. All where changed @5k intervals, every one of them ran flawless throughout their lives. No oil burn off. The oil appeared very clean when it was drained from the engines.
I am not knocking Amsoil, just never used it. Mobil 1 has never let me down.

 

All good inputs. It's snowing nice outside so I'm going to be doing some nice reading on that bobistheoilguy website. Guess the best way to know is to try out both, see for myself if the $3.75 difference is worth it.

 

You won't be able to tell the difference between the two unless you do a UOA (used oil analysis).

 

If you become a dealer the price of AMSOil is the same price as Mobile 1

 

you can't compare the old Mobil 1 to what they sell today is not the same product.

 

not necessarily the only way.. I see a difference although slight in MPG's
but yeah UOA's really tell how far they have fallen(Mobil 1)

 

Use a dino oil like mobil 5000 and save your money or go mobil 1 synthetic and go 10k miles (Like the Camry can with same engine).

 

I have been reading the info. from the link you gave...I have not seen anything in the Mobil FAQ that says they changed their products... Have not read it all though yet. It's a tedious read and I have ADD.hehe

 

Pennzoil Platinum is much better and usually cheaper too than Mobil1! Check out Bobistheoilguy.com for some real Oil info!!

 

How good is the Redline brand?
I'm using 0w20 as i was told it was the right one for the 2011 model.

Couldn't find any Mobil1 Amsoil or other 0w20s other than Redline..

Im having no problems so far but should I switch to another brand if I'm aiming for longevity over performance?
