i immediately tried to start it using my portable car batter charger, which is a champ, and has never failed me. all the dash lights worked fine (forgot to mention they worked before i connected the charger). when i turn ignition key, there's a clicking noise.

i know that nobody can answer based on the scant info above, but is it possible i need to leave the charger on for a bit, that the battery is taking longer to charge because it was more drained than i thought? i don't know how it sounds when there is a starter or alternator problem.

i welcome all suggestions and questions related to this problem. oh, and in case it matters, it's a manual transmission, and yes, i did have the clutch pedal pressed right down, firmly.

Starter needs to be replaced.

In my experience, if you got a click the starter is ok but your battery is near death. Try a new battery first as that is easier than changing out a starter. Hope this helps.

yeah, most common is weak battery. Make 2 measurements:

1. with everything OFF, measure battery voltage. volts=??
2. battery voltage when cranking (click). volts = ???
