Default Bicycle in back of Scion xA?

Has anyone put a bicycle (mountain bike or road bike) in the rear hatch area of a Scion xA when the back seats are folded down. Do they fit OK without cramming them in and messing up the car?

Any chance 2 bikes will fit?

I don't think a dealer would want me trying to cram a bike in the back of a new car, but I would really like to know if one would fit.

Thanks

I don't see why a bike wouldn't fit in the back, especially if you take the front tire off, I put a 42" plasma TV still in the box in the back of my xA and it fit, front seats were all the way forward, but it fit. If you bike is clean, take it to a dealer and ask if you could see if it fits, couldn't hurt.

To make a sale, if the bike was clean, I don't see why they wouldn't... ask to use one of the paper floormats to make sure you don't touch the chain to the carpet.

I regularly put my road bike in the back with the seats down. It's not a problem but I always take the front wheel off and lay it at an angle in the back.

I've also been able to put two road bikes in the back but you should use something in between them so as not to scratch anything. Again you'll have to remove the front wheels off both bikes to do this.

So, you can't put your road bike in sitting upright?

Was wondering about my mountain bike, but have not had a chance to try it out.

Before buying my XB, the dealer let me bring in all my A/V equipment for my business and cram it in to see if it fit!

Yea, I knew I would have to take the front wheel off. For those who put a bike in their car, did it go in fairly easy, or is it a really tight fit.

I can get my bike in the back of my 3000GT, but it just barely fits. I also have to move my seat up further than I like to fit it.

Maybe I'll take my bike to the dealer and a big blanket and ask if I can try it.

You should be able to put the bike in the back without having to move the front seats. I guess it depends on if you have the seats way back or not. I have mine in the middle and have room to spare.

Someone asked about putting the bikes upright, I think the limiting factor is the seat height. It definitely doesn't work with my road bike, but if your bike seat is way low or if you remove the seatpost it might work.

I have an aftermarket mat (can't remember which one but not the factory one) for the back that works really well to keep the car clean. It's basically a thick plastic mat cutout to the shape of the rear hatch with the seats folded down.

My 17" mtn bike just fits. The front seat cannot be all the way back. But somewhere in between.

I think the cargo area height is only about 28-30". My bike won't fit upright.

You could fit two bikes but you'll have to stack them.

I wish car manufacturers would post actual dimensions instead of just cu ft. Would make it easier.

i just went riding yesterday, with the front tires off, my friend and i both got our mountain bikes in the back of my xA with the seats down. We had to stack them, and also pull the front seats a little forward so the forks didnt gouge the front seat material, but they fit. I'd suggest a blanket be put down under everything to avoid grinding in any mud or anything after you ride. It's too bad the roof racks offered for this car are sooooo expensive, if they weren't, I'd have one already.

I wonder how the dimensions how next to an 88 Tercel 4 dr hatch... I've put two bikes in the back of that before without removing the wheels.

The option I chose to transport my Mtn bike is by using a hitch mounted carrier. Yeah...it's more money, but your vehicle stays safe and sound from scratches and all the dirt falling off the bike onto your carpeting. Takes me about 20 seconds to load or unload the bike. The rack removes from the car in about the same amount of time. My carrier is made by Thule (tilt away so that the rear hatch can be opened with the bike loaded) and my hitch is by CURT Mfg. Good luck!

I assume you got a trailer hitch installed? Does it look OK? How much did it cost to have the hitch installed?

I agree a hitch mounted carrier is a good thing (that's what we use on our other vehicle), but I didn't know whether one would look OK on a Scion xA.

Kdepew-This is the set-up I have on my xA with the hitch mounted bike rack. I tow a trailer and sportbike to the track during trackday seasons too. The car can handle the load no problem. If you want a good shop in Houston to have the hitch installed, PM me. This pic was taken this morning B4 heading out to the trails.

I have fit both of our mountain bikes in the back of my wifes xa. it is a tight fit but it can be done if you dont want to go through the trouble of putting a hitch on.

Nice setup 3xv! What brand is the hitch and about how much is it? What's it look like with nothing attached? Is it under the roll pan or through it?

SkyonxA-Thank you . The hitch is made by Da'lan, I believe a sister company of Curt Mfg. I paid $150+tax, and another $35 to wire the trailer lights. The hitch mounted rack was another $150+tax.

No modifications to the vehicle was necessary to install the hitch. Unbolt the towing eyes from the undercarriage, and bolt-on the hitch, fifteen minutes and you're done. The pic shows the only part of the hitch that is visible (green arrow).

I forgot to mention, the hitch is rated as a class 1 receiver hitch. Maximum Gross Trailer Weight 2,000 lbs( WC) , Maximum Tongue Weight 200 lbs (TW)

I personally have a Yakima roof rack (Q-Towers), but I've seen hatch racks on an xA at school.

Default Thanks 3xv.

I'll have to look into that hitch. If my welding skills were better I could probably make one. Bet you get a lot of looks when towing the trailer with sportbike.
