Forgive my ignorance...5-door Yaris in USA?
Since when has there been a 5-Door Yaris available in the USA?
I saw an article on MSN and noticed a picture of a 5-door Yaris...thought this couldn't be right, and jumped onto Toyota's website.
Sure enough, there it is. With an S trim, to boot.
Now, I've been looking for cars to recommend for my girlfriend, and she really wanted an xA like me, but couldn't find one. I might have to see if the Yaris 5-Door could fit the bill.
Of course, when I tested a Yaris, I was sorely disappointed with the plainness of it all compared to an xA. So we'll see.
Am I THAT out of the loop or is this relatively new?

She doesn't like the exterior styling and a few other things about it. She hasn't driven one but she's announced on more than one occasion that she hates the interior too.
If the '09 Yariseseses got a bump in the interior department she'd probably go for a 5-door S. She likes the 3-door Hatch's bubbly style and I think the 5-Door S gives a little bit more "aggresiveness" (can you really call it that? heh) to the whole thing.
I may have to check this out.

yeah, but looking at the yaris versus the xd, the xd has a better engine, options of a manual or automatic, and has way more standard features than the yaris at a glance. also, the yaris just look...well...not good...the xd atleast has style, and lots of parts to choose from to customize it...but maybe the yaris has lots of jdm parts to pick from, but i haven't really looked into customizing the yaris.

Example: She loves black and red. She saw the tC RS5 and I thought it'd be perfect for her, but she hated the seats (even though I showed her some Clazzios in black with red stitching), and she said she wouldn't buy the car because of the seat pattern. Same with the new xB RS. She's picky.
She knows about the smaller engine. She's driven my xA a lot and she said she's fine with the engine performance. She drives a 2.4L Accord right now an she's pretty comfortable with the smaller engine in the xA.
The thing is, the Accord is too big for her. She wants something smaller and she likes how my xA drives. I tried to show her a few xD's that looked good but she just simply doesn't want one.
Every time she sees a Yaris, though, she points it out and says how she likes the bubbliness of it. She didn't want a 3-door hatch, but now that there's a 5-door she might be interested...
...I'm just surprised that they put it out, because I remember dealers and others saying Toyota wouldn't put out a 5-door Yaris hatch because of the xA/xD.
I never really liked the super-round Yaris look, but the new Yaris S styling at least looks halfway decent.
We're going to check them out once the local dealers let us know they have some in stock.

I test-drove a 5-door Yaris S about three weeks ago. Very nice little car. But it was $18 grand, which was enough to scare me away and look for a used xA. I used to have an xA, so I know what I want. I agree with your GF about the xD. I am not interested in it at all.
I also drove a 3-door base model Yaris. The 5-door S is closer to the xA as I remember mine. It's really the same as the 3-door, but the front doors are smaller to make room for the rear doors. The overall length of the car is the same. The rear doors make life much easier if you ever plan to have passengers. The shorter front doors make life easier for you, as they don't swing out so far.
If not for the price, I would be happy to drive a 5-door S. But for half that price, I can find a used xA and be just as happy.

I noticed this car about the time I bought my xa. Thought I may of made a mistake as fuel economy was a big issue at that time. Price wise, I knew I made the right decision.
Myself and my passengers hated the seats in the xd. They liked the sliding rear seat, but with it slid back, you loose your cargo space.
Considering the scions are cheaper than the yaris, its a no brainer.

Thats a great question. I use to get 38mpg a tank til I dropped my xa, then it went to 40. I know about the change in the discontinue of the xa and introduction of the yaris the epa changed the way epa measured fuel economy.

The past year or so they went from results of a closed test loop to real world driving, so all epa numbers are lower than they should be depening on your driving style. Basically, it should be easier to meet or exceed the ratings where as before it too careful driving to meet them.

My xA gets about 35mpg when I don't try. I can hit 40mpg easy if I drive it really easy, but I don't do that anymore.
Mine's an auto, by the way. I use 87 octane and Mobil 1. I saw my MPGs jump when I switched to Mobil 1.
Oh and by the way, forget the 5-door Yaris option. The dealer got an RS 5.0 tC and she fell in love and bought it. I must say, for as much as I don't really care for the tC, I really do like the RS 5.0 package.

Those are just numbers.
Not every testing environment is perfect, numbers can be off, etc. Depending upon the driver, that can affect mpg also.
Nice, a 5-door hatch Yaris in the USA I cannot wait to see one in person. $18K is a chunk of change (could almost get a Imprezza RS for that kind of money), and depending upon where you live, sales tax has also gone up in the last 2-3 months . I'm just glad I bought my xA new when I did.
Ugggg. wait, the 5-door is only available as an auto(thats what it says on the Toy. website
I did not know this. I'm looking at the Yaris page on Toyota's site, and I see that the 2009 liftback is rated 29/35. I think my 2005 xA was rated 34/38. So you're saying these numbers are based on different calculations? I found a thread on the Edmunds forum about Yaris MPG and saw a lot folks reporting 38.

Yea, the auto-only option is kind of disappointing, but tbh I'm happy with how my xA performs (it's an auto). I got it for gas mileage and it does the job.
But seeing the new S package really makes me like the Yaris....
...although I still don't understand why the Tach is only available in the auto-only sedan.

Now they just need to offer the turbo version of the Yaris and we will be all set.
I'm with the other people, the xD is pretty ugly styling wise, while the Yaris can look fairly aggressive with a few minor tweaks.
That said, and completely off topic, I'm REALLY digging the look of that red Kia Soul in the commercial, but... it's a Kia.. Toyota needs to bring back the xA and original xB.
