iPod-compatible head unit question

iPod-compatible head unit question
I want to upgrade the stereo in my 06 xA to the iPod compatible Pioneer head unit, and I was wondering if there are any places to buy the head unit other than going to the dealer and having them install it. I noticed that the head unit upgrade isn't listed at scion.com any more for the xA so I'm slightly worried that they don't make them any more.
If there is some place I could buy the unit, are the 06 xB and tC iPod head units the same as the one for the xA? How about the new 08 models -- I presume those are incompatible with the 06 models.
Thanks for any help!
Daniel

There really shouldn't be a problem with getting the new headunits to work in the older models. I think the only thing that might give u a problem is gettin a clean look since the dashes r different . But even that shouldn't be a problem but its an easy fix if it is. As far as different headunits between the 06 models, they all use the same headunit. U just hold the SSP button down n then scroll threw the menu n choose which model car u have.

I just upgraded my unit to the ipod radio on my 06xA. I bought the unit off ebay, with shipping it cost me only $108 dollars, new it would of been $500 at the dealer most dealers should still have a unit in stock. Here is the bad news unless you know how to install it it cost me $298 dollar to install at the dealer-I wanted it done right and if they screwed it up they would have to pay for it. Maybe I did get ripped off but I love the new-used radio off of e-bay it even has the same built date tag as the one that came out if my car too. Hope this helps.

This has led me to another question: what's the difference between the Scion Parts item (part#08600-21802, $456) and the one at Sparks Toyota (PT546-00080 $264). That's a pretty big price difference.
There's also this one on eBay which doesn't look like any of the Scion head units I've seen:

I'm hoping I'm handy enough to install it myself and save a couple hundred bucks. It doesn't seem too difficult.

I tried asking a few online parts dealers about putting an '08 xB head unit in an '06 xA -- so far two responses: one no, and one maybe. How confident are you that it would work, DriverXa? Not that I doubt you, but I don't feel like spending the time to attempt to install it, then have to sell or return it if it didn't work. 'Cuz if it will work, the TRD Sparks deal link seems like a good deal.

Great info
Am looking to swap out my stock radio with an iPod compatible too. So this info is great.
**I wired mine through the CD changer with one of those aftermarket kits, but I'd much rather have a truly integrated version.

In case people are looking for the same info that I am, you might find this link useful:

Apparently the size and wiring harnesses between all the Scion head units are the same, and since the 06 models have an iPod cable already, in theory it should be easy to swap in an 08 head unit in an 06 car. I think I'll be trying this soon so I'll post when I find out for sure.

Well, in case you're thinking of installing an '08 head unit in an '06 to get iPod compatibility:
It doesn't work
It turns out that the connectors for the iPod jack (the part that goes by the hand brake on xA's) are different than the '08 ones. So, even though the iPod wiring harness is there, taped up under the shifter, it doesn't plug in to the '08 iPod connector. In fact, this is a bit strange but even the AUX jack connector is different.
At that point I didn't bother to pull off the dash to install the head unit. However, I guess there's still the possibility that if the '06 wiring harness will connect to the back of the head unit, then it might be possible to use an '06 iPod jack with the '08 head unit. I guess if I can get an '06 iPod jack somewhere cheaply I can try this. Anyone have one they're willing to part with?
Otherwise, it's getting to be more trouble than it's worth. If anyone wants to buy a like-new stock '08 head unit, let me know.
