Default replaced 4 belts already! Help please.

Hello all,

My mechanic has replaced my belt about four times already. I can't remember if it's the power steering belt or the fan belt. Well, it's making that dreaded squeaky sound and I'm bringing the Xa back to him. Could there be something out of balance? Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Art

jct, yah all bolts were tightened. In fact they put the Xa on the lift and tightned everything from below and above. My Mechanic is checking his sources online as well. We're looking for solutions. I don't want to bring it to my Local Dealer. $$$$

Art,

Check to see if your belt it rolling over on the pulleys. When I first replaced my belt, my mechanic used an aftermarket belt, which isn't anything strange or out of the ordinary. What we ultimately found, however, is that we had to go to the Toyota brand belt because the suggested aftermarket belt was actually narrower than the Toyota brand belt and would twist as the car was running. This caused it to whine excessively, and only when after the third belt was replaced, did we notice the difference. After going to the stock belt, I haven't had any more issues.

Hope this helps...

marfaz,

The first three were replaced with aftermarket belts. Two fell part and the third twisted. The last belt was direct from Toyota.

Thanks to all who replied. My search for answers continues.

My belts squeak sometimes and I just spray some wd-40 on them to quiet them down. Although mine are definitely not loose since the car barely has 12k miles on it. Sometimes a car's belts will squeak bc of rust etc. I know that this may not be the answer to your problem, but I figured that it's an idea worth mentioning. Good luck!

Sounds to me like you might have a misaligned pulley or a bad crank pulley?

my suggestion make sure you are not tensionig the bell to much that will cause friction to wear it out at high speeds make sure you apply just the right amount of torque and also align the belt track really good

You should be able to just barely twist the belt 90 degrees if tighten correctly.

My dad use to throw the alt belt on his 85 vw golf. Turned out he broke the front engine mount and the alt would hit the underside of the hood and flex causing enough slack and misalignment to throw the belt.
