5 grand is your shift point? You going up a 45% grade? 3.5 is max or you start to really burn some gas.

I had a scanguage, sold it to a member on this forum. I liked the fact it gave the engine temp among other things.

 

i get at most 30 mpg . . . . i do all city driving and i try not to break the 2 grand mark . . . couple of friends told me that if i drive with o/d off ill save gas and others say the opposite . . . . will you guys tell me if driving with o/d on or off will save me gas . . .thanks . . . and for those that dont know what im talking about, it is the little button under the big button to switch from park to drive on automatic cars

 

Not sure about the OD, I have a manual. I usually shift around 2500

 

OD helps in most cases...only time I turn it off is for that one long uphill on the way to & from work, so I don't have to floor it to get it to downshift. I'd say unless you're climbing a long incline, leave OD on.

Good question about od, my cargo van did not use it unles I went faster than 40mph. Basically I saw no difference in cruzing rpms unless I was going 45 unless I pushed the od button on/off.

Yeah, its a great idea to turn it off when towing or going up grades as I do not believe these cars have tranny coolers for the autoslushboxes.

The real secret is to be just conservative about the way you drive. Accelerate slowly, shift as early as possible without lugging the engine (this one is tricky) and avoid excessive idling(ie warm up, sitting at rail road crossings or long traffic lights).

Go to your farthest stop first, take routes with least stop lights, routes with 40-45 nph limits, and combine trips. I work near walmart, there I shop before or after work.

Lastly, if you do interstate driving, drive at or 5 below the posted limits unless you are a drafter.

 

263 miles on 7.8 gallons, ouch 33 mpg. All these quick trips to 711 and chineese pulling these 13 hour days are killing my fuel economy. But boy 33 hrs ot I am raking it in.

22,200 miles on the xA. As I've thought between 19,000-20,000 miles the engine has seem to really broken in and the car runs really nice. Still useing Mobil 1 synthetic and I'm gettin 32-33mpg with still gettin up on the car afew times per tank. On a trip to Pennsylvannia I was able to pull off 38mpg which included a run up and down Big Pocono Mountain as well as the surrounding roads running all out. If I'd just went to my destination and back without that extemely fun detour i could have easily pulled off 40mpg. Got the header installed since then and I'm planning on switching to synthetic gearbox oil, both which should improve gas mileage even more. I think only once or twice during the winter when i first got the car with no mods have I seen a barely under 30mpg tank...Since all of the mods I have ran afew tanks where I've just did nothing but drove the car hard and have yet to get under 30mpg. This car is so awesome!

 

Got back from a CO to WI trip a couple weeks ago. 72k miles on my 2005 xA (I'm only responsible for 20k of those miles.)

I was getting only 29mpg on my way to Wi. I'm thinking it was due to the storms I was following until Iowa, where the weather cleared up, and then I got about 34 mpg to WI from there. Coming back to CO the weather was nice and I got a little over 37 mpg. My car was also loaded down with boxes and junk from my parent's house.

The best part of the drive was finding out at the gas pump the truck before me paid $143 for a tank of gas while I paid less than $40. It's hard not to love this car!

in Nov. 06 I filled the tank of my 2003 Expedition (still miss the ride though) at around $80! It was not on empty though. It was not just the fact that it cost so much but the fact that I had to fill it every week. I knew then that I needed a change if I was going to live in LA for the long term

Spent $150 on a pro. detailing of the Ford and did a trade in a few days later. It was then my fill up was once every two weeks and like $35?

 

for those of you getting less than 30mpg you guys are all fail. even with my cold air intake and me mashing on the gas i still get about 33 city and 35 highway if i am good and dont do that stuff i get 38 mpg city and 41ish high way.. its just the way you drive what kind of oil and spark plugs and tires inflation i have 1955515 on my car sumitomos and hankooks in the rear and i am using bg every now and again or sea foam

 

I really don't understand how people get under 30 mpg either.

I got about 28 mpg the first week I owned my Scion, but I wasn't smooth on the gas and I had a bit of fun too.

Now, after 20,000 more miles, 32mpg is the worst I have gotten, and that was from going 100 on the interstate with that steep windshield. It ended up costing me maybe $10 more at the pump and all I did was get home earlier.

You guys, with some discipline, should be able to go 380-400 miles on a tank, at least.
Overdrive 100% of the time is a must.

Lower RPMS=better MPGS

That saves money.

 

I got 26mpg on my last fill-up (213 miles and 8.2 g). Crappy MPG...but...that was 28 days of driving.

 

I agree with zman. My first tank was 36mpg, worse 31 and best 46.6. It seems to take me more effort to get poor vs good fuel economy. Maybe some of these cars never enter closed loop mode, you have od locked out or driving with 10psi of air in the tires. Ive driven a van, mercedes and scion and can meet and exceed the epa fuel economy.

As someone mentioned earlier, the majority of my trips are so short that the car is probably just reaching operating temperature when I've reached my destination. Before the car reaches operating temperatures it's using A LOT more fuel than normal.

Is there any way to get a piggyback ECU and have it use less fuel at start-up, or is that just the nature of gas engines, or safety feature?

I haven't gotten 40 or 38 mpg. My area is stop sign and light every other street.

 

I got 283 miles on 8.2 gallons 34 mpg. Better, but my quick trips to 7 11 and wendys/mcds for lunch working 13 hours a day is taking its toll, but I will plenty of money to make up for it. ANyone else put in more ot than regular hours? Then are comission sales on top of it? Nothing like being number 1 in your game in multiple catagories, I may get the promotion to super.

Anyway, maybe an engine heater will increase your fuel economy, but may consume more energy in heating the enginer, so not sure it will be a net benefit, not to mention the price and installation labor.

Another option is to see if you can lean out the mixture somehow, but it will give poor performance. Its one thing to lean out a warm engine, but a cold one is likely to just stall out or lack throttle response.
