Whoa! Did I really just get 50 MPG?
#21
For the record, on my following two road trips, I averaged about 40. Driving locally, I've averaged 35. I really think the tailwind accounted for the 50 MPG last summer.
My xA is now parked for the winter. We've had 10 feet of snow, and the poor little guy was not made for it. I fire him up every week or two to keep the juices flowing, but MPG has been zero lately.

i would have never thought that gas stations made a big difference performance but.
i have a 1991 gsxr 1100, quad carb, retired strip bike. always low 9s on a sunoco / cam2 mix. Now that i just ride the bike around town and on day trips i found out the hard way that the bike will NOT run on anything other than sunoco fuel. As crazzy as it sounds i promise you it will not run at all, on anything other than sunoco

i can feel and see the difference, i get the skrewiest idling on the cheaper gas.but i noticed i get bout 2-5mpg better when im running with seafoam, even with the cheapy gas. i usually round about 26-33mpg depending my driving. its crazy the difference your driving style can make, ive seen some stats that show at a full throttle you only get 11.8 mpg with the lil 1.5L. and running for an extended time over 4K rpm, you couldnt expect more than 20mpg or below.

average mileage
Before i used to get 45mph and 36-40 mph city but now that i am no longer stock i am getting 35 mph and 31 mph city i have a trd muffler and 118k and no front wheel well covers and cai also so that would be why and also does depend on what gastation you use

I want your tC.. lol... i drive my auto at optimal speeds for saving gas and barely get 24MPG.
I dont mean to question you but you may have been calculating wrong, or my gas station sucks, or you were all freeway with perfect gas... or something. I use chevron... im not sure whats the best.

Believe it or not premium helps MPG a LOT! There is a lot of ethanol in low grade gas and that drags mpg down. Try it out once for your self but it pays to run premium. Run a tank w regualr and check your mpg and run it almost empty. Then run a tank of premium w/ the same driving style, highway city or whatever. I think you'll be surprised; I was!

tailwind + tires to 40psi + just the right temperature outside(air intake sucking in hoter air) + freshly cleaned exterior?? + some other variables = 50mpg
How long ago did you get a oil change?

I've certainly been able to get 50mpg in my xA.. All depends on driving style and seemingly tires too, as my xA is completely stock, sans the tires ever 80k, which is the only time my mpg drops, which is commendable as i drive in all conditions and areas, sans off-road, and even then here and there.
For the first 80,000 miles i would get 50mpg. I tested that by driving 500 miles, then getting gas which amounted to 10 gallons. Did that back and forth several times as i have a lot of out of state friends (i'm from Jersey fyi).. The only thing i can say that changed it was getting new tires. Brought down my max mpg to 36.
The xA can certainly get 50mpg, but i think a lot of the time one has to set aside sprinting at the mark to look "pseudo-cool" and just take it nice and easy, as it really helps on the wallet too!
(completely base stock 2006 xA mind you)

The tricks are:
Keep those RPMS under 3000 at speed.
Accelerate nice and easy.
Stay at 62 or 60
Do not pass unles you have to and then with smooth acceleration.
One person in the vehicle no extra load aboard.
Do your test on a day that is not windy.
Drive on a long flat freeway or as flat as you can.
Drive behind semi trucks at a safe distance but use their ability to break the wind.
DO NOT get to close.
You practice all of these and you might make 50MPG.
And yes different gas affects the mileage.
Anything different will reduce your mileage.
I got 49 M per gallon following those perameters
and then 35 M per gallon driving at 65 to 68 in mountains and city.
This was driving my 2004 Xa 5speed manual with 93,500 miles on it.
Firestone FR 170 P185 60R15 84T M&S tires fully inflated.

MPG on Sciaon xA
we bought a 2005 xA for our daughter. So far the best mpg she is getting is 22. We changed the plugs, air filter and replaced the MAF and that improved it from a lousy 17mpg to 22mpg. Any suggestions???? She only drives it to and from school, maybe a total of 50-60 miles a week. Thanks for any help
