well, how do you drive? lots of hills in 4th gear? I drive in LA, through some slight hills on the freeway and average 36mpg city/hwy. the worst mileage I've gotten so far was 29 mpg when I took a long trip and crusied at 80-90 the whole way. these cars are geared for 65 unfortunately. but that's what makes them feel somewhat peppy as compared to a tercel or echo.

Default my Xa

Hey Everyone. I just joined your site and am a new 2006 XA owner. I so love this car. I have noticed the first tank of gas mileage was pretty dam good. On my 2nd tank now and it's a bit worse. I figured once the car is broke in it will settle down and do better. I put E-10 in it and it runs great. Although after I went thru the first tank I stopped babying it. Could be why the mileage isn't quite as good. LOL

Some details:
5-speed, driven on my 7 mile commute on surface streets. It is usually pretty slow going, so I don't even get much of a chance to let my some-what heavy get the better of me...

I should also add that the car is mechanically stock, and I'm still on the stock wheels/tires.

i get anywhere fron 35-41 mpg with 90% city 10%highway. the worst ive gotten since ive owned it was 13mpg and that was due to a gas tank leak but sunce that has been fixed ive seen no worse than 32MPG. on a roadtrip to teh scion meet in the middle in ames iowa at a cruise speed of 85mph it was still giving a consistant 40mpg. i know you all think this is bs but its damn true. i have no mods done to teh car... no rims no cai no pulleys. could lack of mods be the reason??

Well, I've settled into a solid 37'ish MPG. Interestingly enough this was putting the tire pressure at 30 psi all around and driving a little more normal (ie. 65 - 70 mph) and still shifting most of the time at 2K. I avg 50% city driving.

I was up around 40 MPG doing 60 mph max, short shifting at 2K but this was the original 42 - 45 psi in the tires (as delivered - I still can't believe I received the car with the tire pressure's this high).

Cuppajack: I really don't think 23.5 MPG is bad if your only doing 7 miles for your commute on city streets. Heck I suspect your basically idleing at stop lights/signs for a lot of that - that's zero MPG during these waits. Plus your car may barely get warmed up during your commute. Your engine is not as efficient when cold.

ok, last tank - driving 70 - 80 mph, regular ol aggressive free way driving (off and on the brakes, passing in and out of the fast lane etc) - down to 34.5 MPG.

If I totally baby it (60 mph max, short shift at 2K), I am up around 40 mpg
If I run it at 65 mph, occassionally short shift at 2K, I am down around 37'ish mpg

With my car, driving styles make a big difference.

I myself have noticed that this car is not as good as I suspected for highway driving. Unless of course, you don't break 60 like ever. But even still, with about 80% highway, I get 32-34 on average.

I concur. especially with the flow of traffic on highways going ~80mph in california, ~70mph in colorado. our rpms are really high up trying not to get honked at

In Seattle on I-5 it is typically 4 lanes with an additional commuter lane.

I get in the right center lane. People have 2 lanes on the left of you and a lane on the right of you to merge off and on the free way.

Usually you end up convoying with people who want to do 60 mph, and it tyipcally works out. But you have to let go of the ego and be able to watch people pass you. However just remember, one day you'll be passing them while there at the gas station.... ;)

I just got my xA about 2 months ago and I still haven't been getting good mileage. Yes i do drive in the city 100% of the time cause i am in tucson, AZ but still. I took it to San Diego and was gett 24mpg. that was at 80 mph. right now im lucky to get 29 mpg when i drive. i dont drive it into the ground but i dont really baby it either. is it supposed to get better anytime soon and will the exhaust, and intake im putting on affect it too?

While I don't know the conditions followed for the EPA city mileage estimate, the highway estimate involves modest acceleration, few if any stops, and a 50 mph speed, no AC, windows up.

Your mileage will go up if you reduce your top speed, spend more time getting there, and don't stop/go too much. Many of us are meeting and sometimes exceeding the EPA estimates by doing just these things.

lol yes but most of you no offense are a little older than me. i dont drive it into the ground but i shift at about 3500 rpm any slower and i would never get up to speed. i mean the car doesnt have power at the lower rpm.

I've never tried shifting at 2K. That seems really low. I usually end up above 2K AFTER the shift.

I usually shift around 3K. Average around 36-37 MPG. Never seen 40, though.
