No leaks at all anywhere? Have you done a compression test to know for sure it's not a head gasket? Have you checked for a clogged heater core?

Also, after you did all of that, did you burp the system of air?

I replacing the heater next and I also believe that the fan isn’t working correctly I’ve replaced the sensor and it kicks on when it should but doesn’t seem to be blowing very much

Does the coolant level drop requiring you to add coolant periodically? You can run a chemical test to see if you've got combustion gases in your coolant...could still be a head gasket. Have you also checked the temperature sensor?

You replaced the thermostat - did it go in the right way up?
If you still have the old one you can test it by dropping it into a pan of boiling water to see if it opens up
When you had the thermostat out and hoses off, any sign of corrosion in the engine?

Radiator fans have been known to fail, does it turn easily by hand? (Ignition off test)

I'd try back-flushing system before replacing lots of parts.
Might just be clog somewhere.

Hi, the thermostat I think must be install in one way (position). Also to be sure to use a gasket not too much silicone. If the water pump had no internal damage then the cooling system must take the liquid and circulate from the radiator to the internal heating core, and then the hot engine.
In the past 3 years I replaced in my car the radiator, water pump, thermostat, interior heating core and all the red silicone hoses.

My old car mechanic flush the engine with something (clear liquid like the water). Then the water come out (from the other end) with a very dark brown color.

If you do not have a good mechanic you can not keep an old car !!!

OK man, I’m just chasing down leaks I’m not just throwing parts at it I’ve been doing my research and when it comes to old cars. Yes, I know what I’m doing I restore them for a living. This is the first time I’ve dealt with a Scion
so of course I have reached out to the community for help you want to talk about keeping the car running my daily vehicle I drive is a 62 and we’re talking about something that was made in 2004 which is hardly a older vehicle.

Don’t be rude man. No need in it because first of all just because you’re a senior member of this board does it make you the end-all of all Scion people. As I said I was just reaching
out to the community because I was having an issue and thought I could get some help as I said a daily something that’s over 50 years old. So yes, I know how to take care of an older car.

Sorry for the rant.

@The13thelephant You'll find that Birsan is completely harmless, unless you take some of his 'mechanic-ing' advice, but he's not coming at you in any way.

Hi, I ask my old car mechanic about the overheating issue of the gas car engine. He told me that some times the electrical wires are damaged.
Please check your temperature engine sensor, the electrical wires for any damages, and the connectors.
I hope this info will help to solve your problem ("The13thelephant"), and others (Scion xB First Generation enthisiasts).

In my case about three years ago I replace my engine sensor.
My car mechanic told me that he was by the end of his life.
This part is located on the driver side under the air filter.

Use a 19MM deep socket to remove the temperature sensor for Scion xB 2004.

Here in the picture is the location of the sensor. For Scion xB 2004.

Has this car ever had DexCool or equivalent in it? If so, you need to disassemble entire cooling system and replace everything. The stuff turns to gel, then plastic inside your engine and can't be cleared. It's major reason GM went bankrupt due to hundreds of million$ from class-action lawsuits over DexCool.
