2006.5 cai or sr....

2006.5 cai or sr....
......that won't turn on a "CEL, TRAC OFF, VSC" light!!
A lil history: I purchased a K&N Typhoon setup about two months ago and installed it on my box. Love the sound and throttle response that came from the intake,. BUT... about two days after install (around 100 miles or so) the Big Three lights came on. So, I pulled the EFI fuse, reset the ECU like everyone here says to do, and of course the lights went out and everything was fine. Well, two days later, they were back on again. At this point, I begin to do some snooping around this lovely forum of ours. First, I found a thread about how the crud that's left-over from production of these intakes, if not cleaned out, can lead to MAF sensor failure. Not knowing this before I installed the intake, I took the Typhoon pipe off and gave it a once over. It appeared to be perfectly clean, but I clenaed it out with warm water and mild soap just to be safe. After drying it out completely, I reinstalled. I also cleaned the MAF with electronic parts cleaner, being that it was already out of the car, at this time. Reinsatlled everything, reset the ECU again, and test drove it. No lights, runs great. Well, the two day mark came and the lights were back on again!! At this point, I've had it with the lights. so I take the Typhoon out of the car, reinsatall my stock air box, reset the ECU again, and test drove. NO lights, happy camper. Well, it's been almost a week now, and still no lights.
So.... that brings me to this point. I'm 99.9% certain that the Typhoon caused my lights to come on. WIth that said, has anyone here installed a CAI or SR intake on a 2006.5 and not had the three lights come on? I've searched, and found a lot of 06 owners who have intakes and have reported no problems, but none have said whether or not theirs was an 06.5 or not. Thank you in advance....[/b]

So that means that oil contamination of the MAF sensor is not the issue. To properly diagnose this problem i would hook up the OBD scanner (or invest in the ScanGauge) and read the actual code that sets The Check Engine light. Than look at the freeze frame data under what conditions it was set. How different are the parameters using CAI from the stock air box? You really need to know which fault code is present.
By the way, how does the new intake feel?

I have heard of people damaging the MAF sensor when installing the CAI. Are you sure you had a tight fit on the CAI. I had some sensor problems with my CAI until it was tightened down a bit.

Metal - thanks for the recommendation. I have been really interested in that intake since all this happened, and it's good to hear that you enjoy yours and have had no problems with it.
Reactor - I'm taking the box to the dealer tomorrow for scheduled maintenance and am going to tell them that I HAD a CEL, but it has since gone away. I'll see if they can put the scanner on it and see if there are any stored codes in the ECU, even though the lights are off. I highly doubt there will be any though as the ECU's been reset since the last time the lights were on.
Old - I checked and re-checked this very thing twice: once during initial install, then when I removed the Typhoon to clean the pipe. Both times, the MAF was "seated" properly, and the bolts were tightened down properly as well. I just think it has something to do with the charcoal filter that's present in the 06.5 upper air lid that's not there in previous years. But thanks for the info!!
Thank you guys for the help.

I don't think that it's an issue with the '06.5, buzz. My xA is doing fine with the AEM CAI with bypass valve. No problems so far with intake, header, and exhaust. My advice would be to get a check of any stored codes and have them cleared, then reinstall the typhoon and run it to see if you get the code again.
If you do then immediately hit up your local advance/autozone and get them to pull the code for you to see if it's the same as before, then contact K&N with the issue.
If you don't get the CEL, then smile like you just crapped your pants and no one else knows.

Dealer will know how many restarts you had since clearing the memory. Some faults will self clear if not repeated after 50 drivecycles. If you disconnected the batt and drive to the dealer after a day or two- it may show on their read out tool.

Well as for the charcoal, i have heard this before on another post on 06's but i can tell you for sure i have no problems among plenty of others that have 06 with intakes.. as for going to the dealer becarefull of your wording, know what i mean

Dunno why you're having problems, but I doubt that the charcoal element in the stock filter has anything to do with it.
I removed it in my stock intake, also cut out the plastic screen in the venturi tube inside the air box, and I'm running the TRD filter- no codes, ever...

Alright, just as i thought, I re-installed the Typhoon Saturday morning. Drove around all weekend. Coming home form the Raider-49er game last night and the lights came back on. So, I'm giving up on this intake and ordering an Injen SR. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
