Default Can you feel less than 5 HP? ABSOLUTELY!

Ok, I have been reading lots of posts where people get flamed for buying a cold air or an axle back only to see 3 HP or so gain.

You can feel 3 hp.

Here is an experiment:

Do some spirited driving, then do the exact same driving with the AC on.

Did you feel a loss of power when you were running the air conditioning?

Do you really think the AC compressor takes 5 or more HP to turn?

think of a good cold air as giving you "AC off" performance with the air conditioning running, and a noticable boost with the AC off.

(sorry for a out-of-left-field post, but it had been bugging me for a while)

Good point, I never thought of it like that. I wonder what the compressor actually requires though...

Some people put stickers on their car and swear they feel a difference, so 5 real hp is a big deal!

Well you guys are talking about 5hp. Which is about 5 percent of your power. I think turning on the A/C is about a 10 percent loss so its a little more of a loss then then the intake gives but noticable.

they may have that that cuts off at a certain point but I sure feel a huge difference under normal driving.

Most cars shut off the compressor at Wide Open Throttle for 2 reasons.

1 to reduce parasitic loss
2 to prevent the ac compressor from being spun while the engine turns 6000+ rpm, possibly higher than they are designed to spin.

Here is how I feel about this. This car is a BRICK, and as a BRICK, anything to make it move faster, even a bit more, is an improvement.

I think that the CAI and BORLA, make a big change in the overall drive ability of the car.

I said, ' drive ability ' not Horse Power. Yes, I think you get more HP as well, but the real benefit, (at least for an experienced driver as my self), is that with the extra, (well, for lack of better word), with the extra 'varoom' you get with the BORLA, you feel more confident in your car, you then drive the car more to it's limits, and you thus, have a better (overall) drive ability with this car.

Now, this is purely MHO, and your opinion may vary from mine, but having driven over 30 cars, in various stages of repair, over the past 26 years, I can say, that the SCION xB with the CAI and BORLA is one of the most fun cars I have ever driven, and no one is going to change my mind on that.

There. My rant is over. You may pick it apart if you wish. I don't care. I think I'll go for a drive.

little by little guys, little by little.
Unless you do huge mods at the same time, I think every mods will improve the performance little by little. These are not big engines so anything helps.
I own two xA's and the first one I bought is completely stock, the second one has TRD air filter and exhaust. I had raced each other with my inlaw several times and who ever is driving the TRD will win, I consider myself a pretty good racer but the TRD wins
5hp may not be huge but it really makes a difference, specially when you compare it to the same exact vehicle
Just a thought

i think the A/C takes away about 15hp when it's on, that's why it's so noticable.

3-5hp would be really hard to notice. 3-5hp can change depending on air temp.
